Pre-race routine:

Smoothie, steel cut oatmeal, pack the family up and head to Wash Park. Walk through the finish and port-o-lets then head to the corals. Got stickers and figured out how we would meet up.
Event warmup:

Went out 8 minutes (.92 miles) and worked way back, a couple of strides thrown in there. Hit the potties by the finish and then back to the start. Got back about 15 minutes before start. Coral was filling up. Ended up a lot farther back from the start then I had wanted to be. Once the horn went, it took 20 seconds to get to the start line.

Comments:

Got to the line and there was really no where to go, kept getting caught up, finally worked to the curb and made some headway there and occasionally jumping up on the sidewalk. Cleared a little as we turned north. Opened up to be able to maneuver easily between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile. Got to the 1st mile in 7:20 / 7:00 chip time. Right on pace for my idealistic goal. Tried to keep with some folks around me who looked like they were running easily. Started to fade back from them. I was struggling to hold it. Walked through the first water station but was quickly back with the people I was running around. Hit mile 2 in 7:29 (kind of what I was expecting - hey imagine that, you get what you expect. Tried to hold it together over the next mile and walked the next water too - did I need it probably not, but I wanted the walk break. Finished mile 3 in about 7:45. Needed to get back under 7:30 for the last mile to finish in under 30:00 clock time which was my pessimistic goal.
Had a few go by me then I tried to pick it up and stay in contact with them. Started pushing with about 1/3 a mile left and was hanging with some folks around me, then I gave on last push to the finish, went by 4 or 5 and was in the open at the finish. Beautiful day, just wish I could have run this stronger..... Lot of work to do over the winter and spring.
What would you do differently?:

Get in the coral earlier, move closer to the front. take the first mile a nudge slower I guess, but this was the pace for my OPTIMISTIC (unfounded/unsubstantiated) goal.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered through the finish getting drinks and swag with AJ

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bad starting seeding? a couple of extra pounds? a couple too many miles in the last week, a lack of belief in myself...

Event comments:

Fun way to kick off Thanksgiving - one of the biggest fund raisers of the year for Mile High United Way.

Nice job Peto!  I was out there also...it is a very crowded race.  Next time be sure to get closer towards the front of the coral.

Nice job! I've definitely been there before, starting too far back, always makes for a frustrating start for sure. Still, very nice pace you were able to run!
