North Platte, Nebraska
United States
Nebraskaland National Bank
40F / 4C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 42m 39s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

Slept little. Bagel and egg, and yogurt and banana and coffee, starting at 6:30 a.m., and the race didn't go for me until 10 am.
Event warmup:

None. Should have warmed up. The swim might have gone better
Swim
  • 12m 30s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

No splits for the swim, but it was 15:30 to swim and T1, and I estimated 3 minutes in T1.

Awful swim. When lane-mate and others got up and walked, I panicked and tried to go faster, and lost my stroke, and even got up and walked a bit and caught my breath. Did some breast stroke then to the end alternating with crawl.

Also, folks sort of sand-bagged with their times. They were faster.

Really sort of disappointed with the swim. Felt crowded.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the pool, it's that simple. I'd neglected it badly figuring it was a short time, and I could go do 500 in 11:30 at my local pool, but competition is different. Need more time to gain real strong confidence.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Transition was easy. Had laid out towel for feet, shoes with socks rolled into them, watch and HR monitor on, T-shirt, and belt with GPS and number on it. Then off. Not sure I ran much to the line, but some. Pretty out of breath from the swim, made it hard to get transitioned well.
What would you do differently?:

Have done it now, and it isn't bad. Perhaps I'll move faster now with more confidence.
Bike
  • 56m 14s
  • 14 miles
  • 14.94 mile/hr
Comments:

Speed was like 11 to 14 mph on the way out into the wind, and 17-23 on the way back. Spent more time on the way out, so it affected average speed a lot more than half, which was the distance into the wind.

Two gels and two big waters gone by the end of it... Really helped my run, I think.
What would you do differently?:

More miles on the road. Spinning class is fine, but wind and hills aren't the same. Had wind today. Need to get more accustomed to real world conditions.

Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Nothing to report really. Dropped the helmet and racked the bike and turned around to run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 29m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Got stronger throughout the run. At the end, caught a guy I'd been far behind since the swim. Felt like sprinting but didn't
What would you do differently?:

Get faster. The run was good. Perhaps I could have pressed it harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a couple of quick Gatorades and drank them. Then some snack bagel, etc.

Event comments:

This is really a great race. For beginners it is very friendly and organized with tons of volunteers. Trudy Merrit, the director, is great. For those wanting to go fast, this is a great bike/run. Flat out and back.

Hey GREAT JOB! I didn't see this one before -- sorry my response is a week late! It was a great one for beginners, huh? Out of curiosity what was your final time? According to your info it was 8H 30M and I KNOW that's not right!

Tony,

Yeah, I guess it took a little less than 8 hours. 1:42:39, and that was 3rd for the fitness group in my age bracket. Acceptable. I'll say I could go faster with a better bike, and if we happen to meet at a race this summer you can let that one slip in front of my wife, and I won't mind. Ha. You did this race too, right?

Thanks for the note.
