Subject: ipad users -help please

I am buying my mother an Ipad for xmas and understand that the initial setup requires you to connect to itunes.  She does not have itunes on her old/current computer and I don't believe she has a new enough system to download the latest version.  If i use my apple computer to do the initial setup, is there a way I can avoid syncing her to my email?  I don't care about my itunes library or photos, but I really don't want her in my emails! Of course, the next question is how would i get her email account onto the ipad...?

Thanks for any help.

Create a separate email and itunes account for her on your computer.  It may be easiest to create a separate user account on your computer too.  You would create the email and itunes accounts while you are logged in as her.  That way there is not much chance of a slipup.

excuse my lack of computer savvy - so I create a new user (her) on my computer, then when logged in as that new user, when i open up itunes and  sync up to the ipad it will only sync anything created under her log in.  Since, that won't be anything, she will be up and running with the ipad, - although nothing will be in any of the applications.  I guess she could start a new email account from the ipad - that would probably be easier than trying to figure out how to transfer her current account.

Thanks for your help, please let me know if i muddled anything up!

Yes.  That's it.  Her user account on your computer is completely separate from your account.  That account would not have anything in it unless you put it there.  If she uses something like Gmail or AOL for email, she would just access it through the iPad's browser (Safari).  For those types of email, the old mail is stored on the email server so it would be available to her on her iPad.

I am not real savvy on Apple stuff either.  I know that the devices like iPads and iPods are" married" to one computer and one iTunes account.  It's a pain.

Since the update to iOS 5 (shipping now) you no longer need a computer to setup an iPad.

I did not know that.  My iPad was set up some time ago with an earlier version.  Thanks.

E-mail accounts on iOS devices don't really have much to do with the host computer unless you CHOOSE to sync up the accounts or parts of them like calendars.

Hook it up to yours and just don't sync anything you don't want to share.

as the others have said you don't need the computer sync at all.  I purchased an iPad a few months ago and I have yet to sync it to my pc and it's mine.
