Still Open??

2011, was the first year in a long time 10 years that I didnt' do any races.  Wait I did a 1/2 marathon in march.. woo woo.. the streak is still alive.  But no tri's last year.. Couple of nagging injuries and an accident kept me out for most of the year, and once you get in the habit of not doing something it's tough to get back on track. 

Remarkable while not training I got down to the lowest weight I've been in a long time 210lbs, but the holidays have me back up to 215-17 ish.   It seems that I have a condition where as soon as I sign up for a once within 7 days I sustain some odd injury which keeps me from training and out of the race.  I have named this RD disease.  

I'm mostly looking for extra motivation for accountability and logging.   It seems I go in 5-6 weeks blocks of training pretty well then 4-5 weeks of nothing.  

I'm looking at just doing a couple of sprints/Oly distances this year and I've done quite a few tri's in the past from sprint to IM distance.   The only thing I'm a bit worried about is that I might be accepting a new position where I'll be traveling at least a week every month. While I've traveled before and I know I can run and find a place to swim on the road, biking will suffer.  The fact that running and swimming are my favorites and I mearly tolerate biking doesn't work well with tri's though.

My big goals are to keep losing weight and see if I can get under 200lbs, and getting constistant,  I'll be starting my own 100 day running challenge, with the goal to get 85 runs in.. I did this last year and it really helped my running.

NAME: Big Appa / Cord

STORY: I'm 34 years old and I started doing Tri's a little over 2 years ago after going through a bad divorce. I lost 60 lbs and got under 200 lbs for the first time since I was 20 and placed 10th in my age group on my first sprint Tri. After that I ran a few 5k's getting ready for my first half mary. I then had a few really good injuries that side lined me for over a year and I've gained back 20 lbs. I'm trying to get over the hump to start running every day to get back in running shape.

FAMILY STATUS: Divorced with two kids

 
CURRENT TRAINING: Today? Not at all and I hate it. I need to get motivated to get back the energy to run.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: None

2012 RACES:  Working to run a tough mudder in July.

WEIGHTLOSS: I need to lose 20-25 lbs

How I can help: I have a lot of free time to help motivate others and I'm a great cheerleader.

So here is my last year race schedule and performance

  • February half mary – PR
  • May oly triathlon – I did ok –see race report
  • June sprint triathlon – great learning experience – see report
  • August Half Ironman distance – my A race of the year.  I made my goal to finish!
  • September oly triathlon  - big let down.  Wanted to beat time in May (same exact race). No motivation for this race. Hardly any training on the bike, since the half.
  • October Marathon (two weeks after oly triathlon in September) -  Not much training since HIM.  Motivation very low and get sick a week before. But ended up with a PR (im not that fast)!
  • October oly triathlon (two weeks after the marathon) – Poor!! I did this race a year before and planned to come back and beat my time.  Ended up 4 minutes slower. I was beat up from the all the races I did.  It’s a great race to end the season!

 

So I’m finalizing my 2012 schedule and it looks like the same schedule maybe harder than last year.  I do know after my A race my motivation wasn’t there as well as training time got harder to do as my kids started back to school.  Also I may have to drop couple of these races as it getting expense to race.  If I had to drop two or three races, which one would it be?  What distance I should do?  My goal is to get better/faster especially on the bike & run and be confident to go any distance as well as setting myself up for St. George Ironman in May 2013.

 

  • February Half marathon (in the area)
  • April sprint or Olympic Tri (new race)
  • May sprint or Olympic Tri (in the area)
  • June sprint tri (in the area)
  • August Half Iron man –A race.
  • September sprint or Olympic tri (in the area)
  • October Marathon (in the area) *Have ran this 8 times, goal is to get on the 10 year club.
October/November sprint or Olympic tri in Oct or a HIM in November (still waiting if the race will happen – it’s the silverman in vegas)

So I think I got everyone added to my friends group and you should be able to see my training logs.

So I've got a question already - Does anyone have any experience with weight loss while on medication? If I dropped 9% of my body weight, does that mean I'm now getting a 9% higher dose? Or doesn't it work like that? *confused*

First off I'm not an MD, and haven't stayed in holiday inn in a while. But I have worked in the medical field of oncology for quite a while now {20yrs}  now that my legal disclaimer is over.  the most important question is what type of medication?

  For some meds your body weight is very important, The dose is control by your body mass squared so yes your weight is important.  The clue would be when and how are you getting the meds. Is it something that you are getting filed at a regular pharmacy? then most likely your weight is not that big of a deal as far as your dosage. Meaning that many meds/pills are dispensed by a set amount. and only come with a certain amount of options regarding how it can be done.  Exp a 5 mg pill or a 20 mg pill etc.  that's the only possible way to dispense, so your actual body weight doesn't really account for the dosage you receive.

a poor analogy is think of getting served at starbucks,  you have a choice of three sizes coffee I believe and it's not dependent on your body weight per caffeine

today...  2 miles with a walk / jog of 1 minute each just to see how it feels.

Went well, but I could tell I was protecting it and not swinging it freely like I was my right.

I'm going to go "plan shopping" today (which means look through my books and/or the plans on BT),  That leads to one of my first points of advice.  GET A PLAN (or develope one).

Want the most bang for your buck when it comes to training?  A plan.  Just going out and winging it may be fun and less pressure, it could leave holes in your training.  When one does than, they tend to fall into patterns of doing what they like and what's fun/comfortable.

I personally like the structure.  It requires less thinking on a daily basis.  Do what the plan sais and for the day and be done with it!

Nah.  There is a book called the "essential week by weeks traithlon training plans" (or something like that) by Matt Fitzgerald.  His weeks are VERY predicatable.  For example, he might have a plan than you swim and bike on Tu,Th,S and run on W,F,Su, week in, week out.  It's a pretty good book.  I refer to it so much, the cover is starting to get ruined.  He offers up 12 plans or so for sprint, oly, HIM and IM distances plus a lot of other info.  That around 48 different training plans.  Costs about 20 bucks.

PLUS, feel free to move things around to be better for your schedule.  There are some exceptions.  Is it ideal?  Maybe not, but it's better than nothing.  For example, running three days in a row may not be the best because you are not getting the most out of your run due to fatigue, but at least you are getting them in.  That's the whole "bang for your buck thing".  To be most rested for each workout so you can do them well.

At the top of your training log - where James and Jim have pictures posted...there is an edit link...if you click that - you can paste the list there...then it will show up every time you open your training log.

I do no thtink predictibility is bad either, but running 6 days a week mkaes me wonder about getting everything out of your run that you can. You really make the biggest gains from recovery. Even on the run focused plans I have seen, the max they have you running is 4 times a week. So I would review that part of your plan and make sure you are getting what you want out of the 6 day running plan.
