I don't want to keep it. I despise it. I hate what it represents.

That says it all?

i agree. when my mom got divorced, if she had a conversation like you did with your grasshopper, then she most likely would have changed it. when i was 18 i asked her why she never changed it and she said that she didnt want me and my brother to have a diff last name, like there was something wrong with it. i would have been okay with her changing her name. it doesnt matter now its some long a$$ name i cant spell now that she is remarried.

In this day in age, it's so common for a kid to have a different name than a parent, especially the mother. I'm in my 20s and it was pretty common when I was growing up. Now it seems even more common with mothers never changing their last name when they get married. But from my aunts' experiences, they couldn't wait to change their names back. And one has kids and lived in the South, so I don't think that there were that many problems even for them.

In your case, professionally, it may benefit you to change your name given your ex's past problems.

Ultimately, it is your decision. But also think about what would happen if down the road sometime you got married to someone else? What would you do with your last name then?

I had this conversation with my daughters when they were 5.  I got an overwhelmingly enthusiastic (complete with bored yawn lol)  "I don't care...so and so's name is different from HER mom's ....and so-and so...." and so on.

Your daughter's opinion is the only one that should matter (aside from your own)

THis made me snort! Good think I'm not at work anymore.

Anyway, to the OP, I'd go with "googly moogly" and be done with it. if you get remarried, make him change HIS name to googly moogly as well.
