Hi everyone,

I'm contemplating 2 setups for next year.

1. entery level frame like a felt s22 or a giant trinity alliance a used zipp 404 or hed 3 and a rear disk cover.

2. higher level frame like a planet x stealth or bmc time machine with my velocity tempest wheels (38 mm deep) possibly disk cover if i can swing it.

option 2 is about $200 more

I'm 5'11 175 45 years old.  I normally do sprints and oly's between 20 and 21 mph on my road bike with aerbars . I only did zone 3 training in the past but now I'm doing George's program.  With that and new equipment (bike aero helmet and fitting) I hope to get in the 23 range.

What would you do?

Option 2.  as, you'll end up spending the money on better wheels eventually anyway.  Might as well put them on the finer steed.

get the bike that you'll be proud of.  the one you want to look at just sitting there in the garage, and wipe the dirt off of.  the one to which you have a positive emotional connection.  You're certainly a strong enough rider to not have to justify owning a good frame.

Definitely option two. You can get wheels later and a disc cover on your regular wheels is a cheap upgrade.

It depends on where you're going to stop (if ever).  I don't think you'll see a huge difference between the entry level frames and the others you mentioned.  You'd probably need to jump to a much more expensive frame to see a real difference.  I think the wheels will make more difference.  If you get everything used, or at least for a good deal new, you shouldn't lose much if anything when you upgrade.

x2-wheel covers are relatively cheep for the aero gains (less than $100). i picked up both an aero helmet and rear wheel cover for around $200. I already had the aero bars for my roadie. Between better aero and better engine (good offseason of base build and spin classes, I'm hoping to make a similar jump in speed this year.
