FWIW...

I spoke with the race director yesterday wondering about race day info for the Half Iron distance, since the website doenst have much about it.  She answered my specific inquiry and also pointed out that they will be sending an email this week with the full details for the event on the 21st.

Figured I throw it out there.

Alex.

PS: I think Im running out of weekends in April due to work, Ill have to miss out on the bike course ride I really wanted to do...

Just stumbled on this thread.
I'm coming down from Decatur, AL
Race fit the calender and wallet. Closer and cheaper than NOLA.
Appreciate all the insight. I'm not going to be able to pre-ride the course. The info helps planning.
What's weather like that time of year? 80s?

Thanks,
Doc

I am going to have to packet pick up sat am.  What is the closest hotel to the packet pickup area?  If there are multiple the best value that I do not have to have to have an arsenal locked and loaded to feel safe?

there are alot of nice hotels with in 10 mile of the race site. north columbus is the best area. exit 10, 8, 7 and 6. anything lower  than that your at risk. they are a few across the river in phenix city. on 280 they look pretty nice.

Thanks for starting this thread and to Jason for providing that great course report, which has me really looking forward to the race (my first HIM).  Picked this race for same reasons y'all mentioned, cheaper and close.  And so I can say I raced the first one ever.  Cool

Coming down from Roswell, so look forward to seeing you guys on race day.  Good luck!

Welcome m1hw. Good luck in your first HIM. Should be a good one to do. Not likely to have 1800+ participants like some 70.3s.

Questions:
1. Any locals have an estimate of how much quicker the river current will boost swim times, if any?

2. Is riding on riverwalk tight, or easy to pass on?

Thanks,
Doc

answers

1. the current in the river is minimal. there is some but won't help all that much. but i think will be quicker that a lake swim.

2. the river walk is plenty wide enough to pass. you can ride 4 wide with no head on traffic. so plenty of room.

I'll take it.  Every little bit helps.

Awesome!

At least we know it wont be crowded! lol!  100 is good though.  I just hope courses are well marked.  I didnt have a chance to come down and ride the bike course, I hope I dont miss a turn!

I have a few questions for you guys/gals.  I got the last email with the updated info and swim wave start, I went ahead and looked at the spots where the swim starts and the transition area...

1)  Is the transition area on the Trade Center's parking lot?

2)  The swim course starts in Woodruff Park, how do we get from the transition area behind the trade center to the park?  I know its not a long stretch, just curious which way we go, since we'll prolly be barefooting that walk... (Boardwalk Im guessing?)

3)  One more.  Whats up with the boat ramp on the way back from the swim?  Its mentioned on the course description but I see nothing on Google Earth.  Was it recently built?

Also, 40% chance we may get rain... meh.

Cant wait!!!

Alex

You will not miss a turn it will be clearly marked. from start to finish. there will be support ont he course for nutirion I can't even think of an area where you can make a wrong turn.

1)  Is the transition area on the Trade Center's parking lot?

Last year the transition area was right at the top of the boat ramp.

2)  The swim course starts in Woodruff Park, how do we get from the transition area behind the trade center to the park?  I know its not a long stretch, just curious which way we go, since we'll prolly be barefooting that walk... (Boardwalk Im guessing?)

you stay right on the riverwalk. about 400 yds away. from the swim start. It a straight shot from transition.

3)  One more.  Whats up with the boat ramp on the way back from the swim?  Its mentioned on the course description but I see nothing on Google Earth.  Was it recently built?

you can't miss it. deffinalty not new. full concrete. it will be lined with green carpet from the in the water all the way into transition. in the boat ramp area swim all the till it is about 3 feet deep. it stays deep all the way to the shore.

Also, 40% chance we may get rain... meh.

Thanks Jason!I also remember you mentioned that the few long climbs where before the airport on ur way out correct? Once you ride past the airport it's all flat or rolling hills?Just trying to spot the bigger hilly areas...Thanx again for all the intel!

no there is really only 1 hill before the air port. then you will have about 5+ mile of pretty flat.  about 4-5 miles past the airport road you will start to have rolling hills. enough decline on most  to assist with the next. couple climbers heading out. 1 long down just before the turn around. then long climb btack up. return is just reversed but will have most of the flat coming back to transistions.

Jason, are they moving the swim start upriver? I did the Oly last year, and it's only ~ 800 yds from the start we used (the "steps" that curve out into the river) to the boat ramp. The Oly swim passed the end of the boat ramp, then turned towards shore before turning again and heading  upriver for about 200 yds to the ramp. If it's a full 1.2 mile swim, it seems like lots of it will be against the current.
