I've been trying to process so much information lately, I thought this needed to be started. Here is what I've gathered so far.

The bike poriton goes over 3 bridges (faces of Christine and myself go white), but Rich has assured me that the memorial bridge is a shallow incline and a steep decline. And the course doesn't go back over that bridge, so things are sounding better. Then I find out there is a possiblity of running in sand, don't know how much or how compacted the sand will be. Looks like I'll be heading to the Causeway for some loose sand training.

Thats all for now, got lots of work to do.

You'll do fine...you've got plenty of time to train for it!  Sand running is easier than you think.  Key is to run as flat footed as possible and bound off your knees instead of planting your foot on the ground and pushing off with your toes.  Keeps your toes from digging in the sand and slowing you down.  I used to run sand alot in HS...that's where I learned that strategy and it really does work.  Allowed me to pass a bunch of people at Escape from Fort DeSoto in that 2 mile sand run at the end.

I'm more excited than anything else.....for now. I've read some about running in sand recently and have some training for it planned. I just learned today that I'll have to train harder on the swim than expected.

I thought I heard before to take pool distance and add 20% to equal and OWS of the same distance.

Either way, I'm not ready yet, but I will be.

Best training for OWS is to get out in the Gulf. It is much better than doing boring laps. Once your used to it you won't want to go back to the pool to train.

I don't doubt you one bit. I just need to get some confidence in my distance and breathing before my first OWS. Which will be soon.  Also during an OWS (training) is the distance just estimated? I also need to get over the taste of sea water, I guess that will just come with experience.

Rich is our resident pool hater!  But I totally agree, get out in the gulf, it's fun!!  It'll get you more trained for swimming than a pool ever can.  Look at me telling you this, and I haven't done an OWS mile yet...I guess I will be on Saturday! LOL

Yup, get used to it.  You'll be doing a lot of inadvertent seawater drinking no matter how good a swimmer you are!

I think the thing I remember most about my first tri was how much saltwater I drank. But I didn't know what I was doing ... Not that I do now.

Hey Adam...I was wondering if one of these weekends before the race if you wanted to do a quick practice tri to get you in tune for transition.  I did this before my first tri and it made a big difference.  We can get a few of us together...Rich, can you do something like this??  Maybe Terri can come too...a little group of us, just so Adam can get the feel of how it'll be.  Might make things easier...lemme know what y'all think...

I've been thinking the same thing. I practiced a couple of transitions in my yard (ran through my son's sand box) But I would love to get a group together. Only 3 weekends left, its coming up fast now. This weekend I'm finishing some roof work before anymore storms come.  Thanks for bringing it up, I probably whould have procrastinated and end up knocking over the bike rack on race day.

OK cool...well let's push for the weekend before the race then?  I'll spread the word.  We can do a pool swim at Interbay or something, then ride from there, and then run on the track at Interbay.  Then when we're done we can go to Pane Rustica or something!

That sounds great, nice to see food thrown in there too. Do you have a list of times that lap lanes are available for the summer? If not I can stop by there tomorrow after work. While we're at it we should set a place and time for an OWS the saturday before then packet pickup.

Good idea.  We'll definitely do that.  You know me and the OWS's...I love 'em!

I don't have a list of times, but if you wanna stop by there, that'd be awesome!

Even if we do it in the morning, I'll be out there all day on Saturday anyway, so let's plan on it anyway, even if it's just two of us.  I'm never NOT in the mood for an OWS!!!

NO WAY!!!! Your not leaving me out of an extra swim. I'll be there too. I'm thinking of grabbing a  hotel room nearby. That way I'm not traveling back and forth so much, and my family can sleep in a little. I'm guessing TA will open early on Sunday as opposed to sometime Saturday.

I'm was expecting an AM OWS, now I'm looking forward to a PM OWS too. I need to drink as much salt water as I can to be ready for MPM.

Does anyone know of a mpa for this event yet. I saw the post regarding the likely course over the sand key bridge, just wondering if we will get a look at the full map before picking up packets...

yep, there's maps.  here:

http://www.mpmhealth.com/body.cfm?id=778

the RD assured me we will not be "walking" over the bridge gratings like they did at Sand Key a few months ago.  There was construction being done on those bridges and none on the 3 bridges no this course.  One of them I know doesnt even have grating.   But, still, it's a hill and I suck on 'em.

Christine, Thanks for the course map. I was going to search for it at lunch tomorrow. Now I can spend that time calling some nurses from ICU at MP Clearwater. I'm hoping some will make it out there.
