So I lived in the U.K. for the entirety of 2011. I got an email today from my accountants at Deloitte who are asking me to fill in my `calendar' to show where I was in 2011. They said they need to not only know where I worked but also my travel patterns so I needed to fill in where I was EVERY DAY of 2011 including vacations to foreign countries and to indicate which countries and cities I visited even when I wasn't working. That to me sounds a bit suspicious.

Why would they need to know that?

GAH! Stop it! I'm paranoid enough already!

No really I wanted to know if any accountants can tell me if traveling outside of the U.K. makes a difference in my tax return.

If you have "accountans at Deloitte", you're a 1%er and I have no sympathy.

Deloitte is doing my expat taxes as well for my move to China (I am not a 1%er! My company uses them and provides their services.)

YOu need to "establish residency" so that you can deduct your UK taxes from your US taxes.  There are 2 methods of "establishing residency" and one of them is to prove that you spent a large number of consecutive days in the UK.

Deloitte should have briefed you on this before you went.... but oh well.

For some places, i.e. the Cayman Islands, there is a tax advantage to residing in a foreign country.  People might say that they are despite spending substantial time in the US.  Deloitte is making sure that they have a record of what you say your residency was to protect themselves from participating in a tax fraud.  It is a CYA.

Aha I see. That makes sense. I'll fill it out. She assured me it wouldn't be sent to the government, though I question whether she's a spy.
