The reasons I am ready to begin looking for a new vehicle is no one's decision but my own, and I have my reasons.

Although we have dissimilar taste in vehicles and I have the coin to buy a new car at any time but the last two I bought had over 50K miles on them, good for you!  Don't let other people coach you, without knowing anything of your finances, on how to spend your money.

Is a land-rover worth the price of admission to me?  Nope.  But my criteria may be different than yours (branding, for example)... and what's to say mine are better than yours?

Buy the car that you want, especially if you have the cash (or even if you don't as long as you don't start playing the victim when life happens and all the sudden your car payment is hard to make).

I don't mean this to sound condescending... but I need people like you to buy my cars from

then the OP doesn't go on a public message board asking for opinions not expecting to be criticized.

Except the OP asked for opinions on the vehicle, not finances... and got both.  I was fully supportive of the "range rover isn't exactly reliable" advice, but just think it's out of place for the "it's foolish to sell a car with only 60K miles on it just becaue you want a new one" unsolicited advice.

graceful_dave - 2012-03-18 11:17 PM Another vote for the Honda Pilot. Ours has a bit over 100k miles on it, and we plan to drive it for at least another 5 years. It's a 2006. We bought the loaded trim level and there was no appreciable difference between it and the Acura MDX of the same year other than a hefty price increase for the name. In fact, when my Audi goes, I'm going to start driving our current Pilot and unless something amazing comes along, we'll be replacing the Audi with another pilot for my wife. At first I didn't like the latest redesign, but it's grown on me and the interior updates seem to be all positives. As an aside, the Audi Allroad is not truly "all road." I sunk mine in mud up to the frame last summer and had to get pulled out. Could have been the summer tires that were to blame though ETA: I wouldn't call the Pilot a truck. I refer to it as a bloated station wagon.

Agreed.  Most of the SUV's are just bloated station wagons.  I live in the south so a truck is a pickup truck with a bed and a tailgate.  I like the Pilot but it's pretty expensive for the size.  I like the tahoe for that price.

So, is an Avalanche a truck?

Not exactly an SUV, but I bought a Ford F-150 pickup. It has more seating room than our Suburban and if you put a tonneau cover on the bed, I think it has at least as much storage as well. All depends on whether you like the look I guess...

A Suburban with front bucket seats and 2nd and 3rd row bench seats has seating space for 8 people.  There is no way your F150 seats 8 people.

The Avalanche is what happens when a Chevy truck and Tupperware have a one night stand....

I had a 2007 Avalanche and LOVED it!!!  They did a redesign and got rid of all the plastic on the outside.  I drive a Suburban now so there is a little more security for my bike inside the vehicle.

Do they not make Hummers anymore???

I would say go for some sort of Toyota product. Is the FJ Cruiser still on the market? What about that Sequoia beast? Perhaps the luxury version of such?

I rented a Toyota FJ Cruiser yesterday. Really fun truck. definately a truck suspension and feel. Great power and pull and even decent highway manners. I DID take it on a fire road and in 4WD just to try it for a bit; very fun and lots of low end torque. Well appointed, rubber floor mats and the seats should clean up nicely if they get muddy.

I really liked it and am NOT a Toyota guy.

GMC sold that off when they took the bailout money back in 2008/2009.  A Chinese company bought the brand.

Another Pilot vote here. We have an '09 with the entertainment package so it has a built in DVD/game hook up system for the kiddos. Also has a hitch which the previous Pilot did not have. Great for the bike rack! On road trips, we have plenty of room for us, the kids, toys, luggage, the dog, and of course throw the bike on the rack and go!

Husband has the Toyota Tundra in full size crew cab. That is a very roomy cab and we love it, but we will take the Pilot on road trips to save on gas.

Or IS it truly "all road" and no "off road". Symantics become important here...

Technically, I was on a road. Just a very muddy, unmaintained road, but defined as a road by the WI DOT.

Here's my vote, this was probably the most fun vehicle we've ever owned.  There's not many a place where this can't go and you can do it with style.

And the kids loved it too:

Heh heh just don't take your G-wagen to the outback.

http://youtu.be/1fNwKYPX5ws

They've been made for over 30yrs.  Don't know how they are now but my parents friends left one at our house back in the 80's.  My brother and I, being a couple of teens took it out to a sand pit.  With both diffs locked, it was unstoppable with it's tiny (compared to modern G-wagens) 6-cyl engine.
