Shelbyville Triathlon Series Race #3 - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Shelbyville, Kentucky
United States
Head First Performance
50F / 10C
Total Time = 1h 06m 11s
Overall Rank = 2/45 w
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep well- been plagued by a cough all week. Woke up 2 hours before alarm (4am). Had half a bagel with pb and honey and half a banana, sipped on gatorade. Had g.i. issues but nerve-related; food was fine= no nausea. Also, took one ginger and one S-Cap right before race. Wore tri shorts and tank, and new Phiten compression sleeves for my mending tibial stress fracture.
Event warmup:

A few laps in the pool. Was not feeling comfortable about swim.
  • 08m 19s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards

My time was a minute faster than the reverse tri. However, I was panicky, nearly hyperventilating and unable to relax. Not sure the reason. Passed a couple people and got passed by a few. I was thinking negatively the entire time, berating myself for panicking and telling myself, "If you can't handle this you'll be in trouble in an OWS."
What would you do differently?:

Think positive. Learn to relax!!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s

Transition went pretty well except for one thing. I couldn't get my right cycling shoe on. After three attempts I realized there was an object inside. I pulled out a small, pink, rose-scented candle. Strangely, my friend had the same issue but he found a Corona bottle cap.
What would you do differently?:

Check my shoes for foreign objects! Invest in a pair of tri shoes.
  • 33m 4s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.77 mile/hr

I started the bike with a cycling friend and we were back and forth with the lead for a while until she took charge and I sat about 8 bike lengths behind her. I think being near each other really helped to push, because we ended up 2nd and 3rd in the bike DESPITE making a wrong turn and going down a dead end road with a group of about 5 others. It probably cost us a minute.
What would you do differently?:

Not take a wrong turn. Remember to drink.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s

This was a decent transition for me. I did french braids which allowed me to skip a visor. Had Yankz laces on the Kinvara's, so got into them quick.
What would you do differently?:

Get tri shoes.
  • 22m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile

I was really happy with this run. I've only been running a couple weeks during this comeback from my stress fracture (which happened over 4 months ago now) and it's all been treadmills or grass with no real speedwork. I felt very comfortable, the shin felt great and I was able to chat the entire time. Missed #2 fastest run by 2 seconds. Felt good sprinting at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I feel good about the base I have and look forward to start training and doing speed workouts again. Goal: Get back into 20:00s by June.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a bunch of bananas and oatmeal cookies. Talked the ears off everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pool comfort is still a huge obstacle. I think triathlon shoes will help, too. Next time I hope to stay on course as well!

Event comments:

LOVE these races! I was shocked when they announced I was 2nd OA female. Since it was a staggered start nobody knows until the results. For that, I won a gorgeous trophy, Yankz laces and a gift card to a triathlon store. The people and volunteers are wonderful at this series, and you get a really unique shirt for every race in the series. And they're inexpensive!

Awesome results.... wow, super speedy with that new bike, and the run too!!!  Smokin' fast!!  Keep working the swim, it'll come around... work the weakness, race the strengths!!  And check the shoes... very strange, that.

Great race Erin. I'm sure the swim comfort will get better with more exposure and you'll get back to the 20's for the run eventually.
