Total Time = 1h 17m 42s
Overall Rank = 15/227
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/15
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00am. Wheat bagel and Ensure. Out the door at 4:45am for 1.5 hour drive to race site. Picked up race packet and got set up
Event warmup:

Short run with some strides. 10 minute swim
Swim
  • 09m 57s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Terrible swim. Goggles leaked and I had to stop 6-7 times to clear them. Otherwise a decent swim. Same goggles I have been using for weeks and they were fine during warm up swim
What would you do differently?:

Not have leaky goggles. Lost 1-2 minutes on the swim. Not a good start
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Had some trouble getting wetsuit off. First time going sockless so that saved a bit of time.
Bike
  • 43m 19s
  • 17 miles
  • 23.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Solid ride. Was looking to average around 230 watts and ended up with 231AP and 236NP. Could have gone harder but wanted to save a bit for the run. Lost a little focus during the middle of the ride but overall a good bike segment. Road was pretty rough in places.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Pretty good. My transition spot was close to bike in and run out spots
Run
  • 21m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

I hit a button on my watch leaving T2 and didn't realize until several minutes later that the timer had stopped running. Tried to maintain around 7:15 pace. Felt pretty good throughout the run although the trail portion toward the end was pretty tough. 2+ minute improvement over last year's run time
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Feel like I executed well and pushed hard through the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

A bit of stretching and light jogging. Visited with some folks, rehydrated and enjoyed the post race activities

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Leaky goggles. Pleased that I was able to refocus after the swim and still have a good race.

Event comments:

Great race. This is the 2nd year of the race and they have done a great job both years. Lots of volunteers, good swag, super post race party/activities. Only suggestion would be to post results as they become available rather than waiting until awards are done. Will be back next year. Everything I look for in a race.

Great race Randy, solid in all three legs, even with the goggle problem.  (Bike was really fast!)

Super race, Randy.  And you're way too hard on yourself with the swimming.  Bummer about the goggles, but the swim (especially if you lost a minute) was solid.  And who the heck is this old guy who beat you on the bike and run... damn fast dude.  I thought Armstrong was racing somewhere else... anyway, great job... all that consistent training is paying big dividends.  That's a huge improvement over last year's time.  Congrats!
