Champion 8903     |  Subject: Speaking of anniversaries......I must have this penchant for dealing with the macabre. Today is May 23, the birthday of my first girlfriend. Since I broke up with her in 1968, I have no idea where she is today. But I always remember her birthday because it's on the anniversary of the day that Bonnie and Clyde were gunned down near Shreveport, Louisiana in 1934 (no, I wasn't there). Flash forward from her a couple of years to 1970 when I met my wife. Her birthday was on April 30th and that happens to be the anniversary of the day that Adolph Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide. OK I'm done with establishing relationships with new women!

But many of us still do. I was in the 5th grade and out at recess when they called us all in and told us that the President had been shot. Several teachers were holding each other and crying. This was a short time after the Supreme Court had banned prayer in school. I distinctly remember my teacher telling us that he didn't care if he got arrested or fired, but that we were going to pray silently for the President and the country. It was a different time. |
