Pre-race routine:

I didnt get to sleep until around midnight and then woke about 4:20. I had planned to be in bed at 9:00, oh well. After i fumbled around getting dressed, I took my standard 4:30 pre race photo and loaded my bike on the Jeep. I drank 2 water bottles and about a half bottle of Gatoraid. I took a toasted bagle with peanut butter with me for the drive.
Event warmup:

I got on site and set up my transition. I ate 3 cliff blocks, drank more water, got my chip and cap. I had to pee, so I got in line. 5 porta cans, thats all, 5 porta cans. I wait in line until 6:55, they called my AG to the water, so I left the line and did the next best thing, I walked out to about chest deep water and let it go.....
I did not get a warm up at all, I wish I did.
Swim
  • 10m 29s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

I don't know why, but I started out breathing only on my right side every other stroke??!! I swim a few times a week, and I do it bilaterally on the third stoke. I swam the whole time from one side, I was winded the whole time and felt out of breath getting out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim the way I train!
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Transition was a small half circle driveway. My spot was in the middle on the end of the rack, first spot on swim out. I had a curb to sit on and lots of room. I drank a few sips of a gatoraid bottle, put my shoes on and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

I want to learn to have shoes on bike and do a jump start. I don't think it will make me any faster, but it looks cool!!!
Bike
  • 29m 30s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the bike. This was the first time to race this bike, I have had lots of problems with the rear wheel, but I think Sam at Trivantage fixed it!!!!
I got up to speed very fast. I got down in the areobar within 1/4 mile and stayed there most of the time. Since i was in the first swim wave, and I finished 25th on the swim, I had a good idea I was doing well. I passed 19 other racers, and not one person passed me! At one point I looked at my speed and I was going 25mph, I knew this was too fast so I backed down and kept it between 20-22mph for the rest of the race. I used my areo drink bottle without a spare water bottle, I ran out of water at 8.5 miles.
After the first 5 miles, we just did the same course again.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, maybe go a bit faster. If I had known where I was (6th place), I might have gone for a better finish. Maybe bring a spare water bottle in cage.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I missed my rack and had to back track a bit, lost less than 30 sec. I pulled bike shoes off, slipped feet into already tied running shoes. Drank some water and gatoraid, grabbed race belt and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Spot my transition area better, find a unique landmark, maybe use a balloon or ribbon.
Run
  • 25m 39s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I was running very slow. I thought I was having a crappy run. Truth is, this was my fastest tim for a sprint tri ever!!
Since I was in the first swim wave and had done so well on the bike (there were only 6 in front of me), I found myself in an area I have never been in before, the FRONT OF THE PACK! I didnt pass anyone at all, but I got passed by 19 peaple, I counted them as they went by! Looking at the results, some of these were very fast, like 6-7 min/per/mile. So it felt as if I was just soooo slow. I paced off a few of them for as long as i could, but never lasted too long. I got water at 1 aid station. The last turn was a 100yrd dash to the finish chute. I had nobody to "race with" so i just picked it up and sprinted to the end!!
What would you do differently?:

Focus on MY race, not the ones that pass me.
Post race
Warm down:

After race, I got some water, a bagle, watermelon ect. Walked back to the finish line and cheered on the rest of the racers. Gave Richard (Tag) a high five as he finished.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My nutrition was bad of a few days prior to the race, and I didnt get enough sleep the night before. Otherwise I was well trained for this race.

Event comments:

I really like doing the sprint races, but I am past them in ability.

GREAT JOB!

-->> "I don't think it will make me any faster, but it looks cool!!!"
Now THAT is funny.

I like how you're able to have FUN with this -- you're performing really well without stressing out or getting overly intense about it. Excellent!

Good job Joe!

We BT'ers need to figure out a way of meeting each other at a race. I am pretty sure I was racked right by Jmkirwin in my age group, but didn't know it. Also, if they would post bib#'s on the results page, a person could cross-reference with the race pictures, and that would be cool.

See you at a race down the road.
