Overall Rank = 97/700ish
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 22/80
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:30 because we had to be on the boat at 6. Bagel, PB, and a coffee and I was out the door. Pretty simple to set up transition. Went over to the CyTri tent and hung out with some teammates and then we all headed to the boat.
Event warmup:

No real warm up as we jumped off a boat.
Swim
  • 33m 15s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

Horrible swim. Really choppy and I just kept trying to sight when I was in the trough between waves. I kept totally losing sight of the buoys. Pretty sure I swam many more meteres than 1500. Then as we approached the swim out there was a log jam and we had to stand up much earlier than we should have. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to sight in choppy waters.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

It's about a quarter mile from the shore to transition. Hit the wetsuit strippers on the way. Somewhat quick in and out and I was on my way.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Need to practice more fluid mounts on the new rig.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Slow ride out against the wind for the first 10 miles. We then made a sharp right and the speed picked up immediately. 2.5ish miles down and u turned. Keep on trucking then we made a left for home and had a tail wind. Click, click, click. 30 mph. Weeeeeeeeeee. Needless to say a fun trip back in.
What would you do differently?:

Not a whole lot. Spin it faster heading into the headwind.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

I was in a major crowd coming into T2, lots of people from the sprint race getting back in at the same time, so I didn't unstrap on the way in. I just unclipped at the line. Racked my bike, switched shoes, threw on my visor, and....... forgot my race # belt. Got halfway to the run out before I noticed and double back.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my race belt. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Run
  • 48m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was nice to begin with. We started out in the neighborhood so we were sheltered from the wind. Felt my hammy start to catch at about the mile and a half mark so I grabbed some Coke at the aid station and it went away. Started out in the high 6s and settled in to a 7:15-7:30 pace for a while. Then we got to the bottom of the bridge. My pace went in the dumpster and about halfway over the first time I really wanted to puke. Just kept on trucking down the backside. Then a Uturn and back up the bridge again. This time with a headwind. Just a mean twist to the end of the race. Once over the top I settled back in to the high 7s low 8s and finished out the race. Didn't quite have the kick at the end I hoped for.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Hydrate a bit more on the bike so I don't come off so parched.
Post race
Warm down:

Made a B-line for the port a potty. Damn I had to go #1. Other than that the crowd didn't allow for much of a cool down. The way I'm feeling today I should have jumped in an ice bath. I found Cindy and kids as well as shooting the breeze with friends and teammates. Then it was time to go out and find friends who hadn't finished and cheer them on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough experience in choppy surf.

Event comments:

As always this is a great race. All of the OUL races are. Very enjoyable and I'll be back next year for sure.

Great job dude!  that's an awesome time even with the sighting issue.  That's pretty good in choppy water too.  I need to get over your way and train with you sometime.

I hope when the dust settles you can appreciate how well you did Sunday, impressive execution Scott. Doing well at all 3 on any given day is all we can ask for.

Thanks Keri.  I do feel like a PR close to 20 minutes is a huge accomplishment.  Don't get me wrong.  I also know that I can do better.  Sometimes it takes friends and family telling me to step back and take things in to make me do so.  So thank you.  I really do appreciate it.
