Total Time = 3h 40m 12s
Overall Rank = 484/574
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 18/20
Pre-race routine:

Picked up Ron Stitt at hotel, hit the coffee bar, watch Ron spill coffee down his crotch. Before race, down Ensure Plus and half a muffin - one bottle of EFS on the boat.
Event warmup:

Walked to boat with Cy-Tri dudes, tell jokes, people watch. IOW, nothing.
Swim
  • 53m 54s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not quite ready at the start. Jumped in and immediately lost my breath. Never really got it going, swam most on my back and side. Had trouble with bloating about halfway through. Waves were tough (1-2')and ingested seawater. Overall a horrible effort after all the pool practice.
What would you do differently?:

Need to spend more time OWS, just never got my head into it.
Transition 1
  • 04m 23s
Comments:

Regroup, cleaned off face and feet, drink some EFS.
Bike
  • 1h 34m 31s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Probably should have pushed it harder but was worried about the run and Kemah bridge. Had some tightness in left hamstring.
What would you do differently?:

Need more time in the saddle, including some hill rides. Hit HCC and straight into Hempstead or to Monaville.
Transition 2
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

Had to stop and pee before run start.
What would you do differently?:

Be faster.
Run
  • 1h 04m 24s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Actually felt pretty good on the run. Had to stop and hit inhaler about a 1/4 mile in, walked the water stations and up both sides of the bridge. Some tightness in right quad and some ankle pain. Based on HR might have been able to push it more but was definitely feeling the bike ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not walk at all.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to step up the training, including bike time, OWS and work on getting faster on run. Since this is 1st Oly I wasn't expecting to win it but thought I'd be MOP. Swim time killed that.

Event comments:

Awesome job by the race volunteers and team. Couldn't ask for anything more, except chip that reads at all timing mats.

Good job in tough conditions out there Pops.  Ron spilled coffee on his crotch huh?  Well I know he didn't have a shirt on so I guess that was the better option.
