Subject: Becoming a herbivore
Any of you guys/ladies vegetarians?  I have been reading up on the subject and have considered doing it for 90 days to see how it impacts my training.  I am aware of the environmental benefits, etc, but I am looking at it strictly to see if I can improve my recovery time, weight control, etc.  I understand that it is more invovled than just cutting out meat, so any tips are welcomed.  Any personal experience is appreciated as well.

Here here!

For me the main challenge is staying full with a decrease in protein. If you aren't going vegan, you can turn to dairy, eggs, whey protein, etc. Other sources of protein I like: tofu (learn how to cook it), quinoa, oats, lentils, beans, nuts, dark greens, greek yogurt, protein powder (I use hemp or Vega).

Also in the Nutrition forum here's a recent vegan thread: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=260803&posts=44&start=1

Ask if you have any other questions, happy to help.

I've been a vegetarian going on 6 years now.  I would suggest finding a couple of good vegetarian cook books.  Three of my favorites are:

Clean Food by Terry Walters

The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen

Thrive Foods by Brendan Brazier

Remember just cutting out meat does not make for a good/better/healthy diet.  It's easy to overload on carbs and miss out on protein if you are not thoughtful with your choices.  You need to maintain a balanced diet.

I have been meat/dairy free since November; other than a couple of business functions which could have been really awkward... I am not doing it for ethical reasons, just better overall health. I have lost about 15 pounds and overall feel better, more energy, sleeping better, better concentration. I have just read "engine 2" which really has struck a chord with me.

I have found it not too difficult to give up meat. I have not noticed a lack in energy for training, although I am not training at a high (full IM) level these days. Good luck in trying it out, hope you have good results!

I'm ovo-lacto.  plenty of choices and protein sources.  I'm not 'devout' and will eat a little dead animal flesh a couple times a year when there either 1.  nothing else available to eat, or 2. I'm at someone elses house for dinner and that's what they're serving...to be polite.

If I do eat dead animal- I go with fish.  Lower on the food chain.

I eat everything I want to eat.  I don't feel deprived of anything.  I also eat often/continuously.  Perhaps I'm decended from a heard of grazing animals.  Hopefully Pronghorn- as they have a Vo2Max of around 300.

Non meat eater since 1975.  x2 on some good cookbooks or internet recipies.  Also most of the textured vegetable products on the store shelves either have recipies on them or links to them.

Depending on where you live, shop at Whole Paycheck, Sunrise Market, or some other health food sotres for products and suggestions.  Also don't forget 7th day Adventist's are veggies and usually have a store (ABC) connected with their facilities.

Wifey is a fantastic cook and has lots of things.  Contact if you need more info.
