Is anyone considering this race?  I am looking for a Oly in July august and I live extremely close to this one.  My concern is its in its inaugural year but run by a proven company (eventpowerli)

I am familiar with the roads but never looked at that "river area" that closely....never thought of it being too clean

any thoughts?

I am doing this race and had the same concerns as you but I need an Olympic in this time frame since I am unable to race the NJ state one anymore. I am coming from Brooklyn and will probably make a weekend trip out of the race since there is no day of packet pickup, but looking forward to it.

I am doing this race as my first Olympic distance race. Dirty water is not fun, but it is really close to where I live so....ups and downs. I am not going to know anyone there, so if there are other triathletes that want to meet up after/before the race, let me know!

I am signed up for this race as well. This is my first olympic distance tri. I am still on the fence about it though because the person I was going to do it with cancelled. I hate going to these races alone/ no one to motivate me or talk to before the race.... no one I know is willing to get up that early to go with me So I will see... still have 2 months to decide I guess.

this pretty much sums up my tri experience for the most part...I get family there but not the same compared to other competitior friends.......we should have a BT banner where all the cool triathletes hang out lol

Haha, I am ok with that. I may have a friend who comes with me, who introduced me to this website. Maybe we should talk about meeting up as the race date approaches.

the river is not so bad, i've swum in worse (Hudson- although that is fast flowing). I actually swam in the area where the race is being held for a promo video for event power. the water is brackish, not much of a current and relatively clean. it's a time trial start so essentially athletes seed themselves on swim times. the biggest difficulty will be exiting the river, as they have a pontoon which will be moored across the canal and it's up to the athlete to pull oneself out possibly with the assistance of a few volunteers but i think the onus is on the athlete. i'm pretty excited to do this as it fills up the race calendar nicely before IM NY/NJ

I'm doing this race Sunday as well. I think I saw someone mention in one of these Riverhead Rocks threads about the BT'ers meeting up. It would be great to be able to do that.

Yes I'm doing Smith Point as well. That one is like a home race for me since it is pretty much in the neighborhood so I'll likely see you at both events.

65 years old and doing his first tri, that is awesome. Did you say beer truck? I believe that will be added incentive needed to finish this race quickly!

Anyone know the condition of the water?  Better than the Hudson River?

I cant vouch for the cleanliness, but it is brackish....the narrow area has some vegetation pretty close to the far side so this may give us some critters in the water....everytime i have looked at it towards the start it is pretty calm, minimal current with little to no chop(famous last words).

but i heard from the rd that there will be a beer truck here too lol

Hope everyone had a good day...and hoping you were not the poor guy that crashed about a mile in front of me.

I am going to make a race report but overall I was happy with the race, not just my performance but how it was run....the only thing that was troublesome was the water conditions in that last 200 yds or so....havent gotten sick yet but a little nasty....otherwise I loved the mainst finish...more to come in the report when i get a chnace to do it

what did you guys think?

Congrats to everyone who raced yesterday. I had a blast out there and I wasn't the one who crashed thankfully. I thought overall the event was run pretty well especially being it was the inugural race. The swim in the canal wasn't too bad and there was some debris in there from the storms the day before otherwise it might have been a little better. At least it didn't rain during the race either which I was worried about more than the swim. I thought I did really well considering this was the first Tri I've ever done. I managed to finish in 2:58 so I was extremely happy with that result. I hope everybody had a great time and hope to see anybody who will be racing at Smith Point this coming weekend.

I thought the race was put together very well.  The bike and run course was good.  The volunteers and police did a great job patrolling the "major" intersections.  The only issue I had was with the swim--there were just some funky tasting parts.  Still, also haven't gotten sick, so we'll see.  I also came into T1 with a loss of equilibrium.  Had to sit by my bike for a minute...

Finished with a decent time of 2:35:09.
