Sneaky Slow 8694 Herndon, VA, | Subject: Obama endorses same-sex marriage Lost in the arguing and ad hominem stuff going on in the NC thread was the fact that Obama came out today in support of gay marriage; the first sitting President with the guts to do so. Predictably, religious conservatives were furious and many folks on the left were ecstatic. Ralph Reed, a top organizer among religious conservatives, said Obama’s announcement was a “gift to the Romney campaign.” Romney, a Mormon who has evolved to a more conservative position on hot button social issues, has struggled with his party's largely evangelical conservative base in the primaries. But Reed said Obama’s gay marriage support would help Romney in many battleground states. “The Obama campaign doesn’t have to worry about New York and California,” Reed said. “They have to worry about Ohio, Florida and Virginia and I don’t’ see evidence that it’s a winning issue in those states.” This might be the only accurate statement that has ever come out of Ralph Reed's piehole. I think, that especially in an election year, this shows some courage on Obama's part, taking a stand on an issue which may well cost him votes come November. At any rate, the tide is turning. Slowly but surely, gay/lesbian marriage will be allowed everywhere in this country. It's only a matter of time. And there is little that Ralph Reed and his brethren can do to stop it. |

I wanna marry my cat AND the dog you're married to, too ... and a nice girl or boy or two. And the way things are going, I'll be able to do all that AND get the tax breaks for having a large family! Kudos to Obama. This is THE civil rights issue of this generation and he stood up. |

It is archaic. I know and love so many people who are affected by all of this on an emotional level. It is ridiculous that we are even having to debate this as a human right. |

At the end of the day I'm married to my bike and love her so very much. Though, now I think about it, if I were single I would hope all men would marry each other, free's up the buffet for guys like me. Thinking further on it, that could be complicated. Who were we talking about? |

The minute I heard the news, honestly, I thought two things. 1: Dang, that's gutsy! 2: Dang, he just lost the election. I hope I am wrong...but I have a strong feeling that May 9th, 2012 may have just pushed Mitt into the Oval Office. |

I feel for the people who are currently being affected by this discrimination but it will definitely be a non-issue within a generation or two. Speaking as a 26 year old knowing people of all races, religions and political persuasions I do not know anybody under 35 who would actively vote against gay marriage, lots who would vote for. |

Hmmmm....I thought he already took a stance a few years ago when he said he was against gay marriage. Sorry, but I'm not buying his "evolving stance" on the issue just months before an election. For those that are against his new stance he likely isn't losing their vote because they likely wouldn't have voted for him regardless. Maybe this gives Romney a free pass on his "evolving stance" on the abortion issue (note...I am not equating the issues of gay marriage and abortion....just the "evolving stance" approach now used by both). Perhaps Hispanics. And maybe religious blacks. But are those two groups really going to vote for Romney? |

Who is it that currently supports him will not be behind him after this change of position? Really? no downside? 62% of blacks are against gay marriage. An even higher percentage of hispanics. it will energize the religious right base for Romney in a way that Romney hasn't been able to do. Swing states are filled with white, working class religious men. States like Ohio could now go Romney. North Carolina, where Obama won with a very slight margin in 2008- just overwhelmingly passed a constititional amendment banning gay marriage. this is a huge risk for the president. Agree or not- but this guy has balls. I think america respects that in a president. Someone who stands up for what he believes... although, it took him long enough. (although- maybe he was really telling us the truth. maybe he really has been on the fence on this one? don't know. sometimes it takes a leader to set the ship sailing in the right direction, even if more than half the crew disagree. |
