Total Time = 1h 15m 4s
Overall Rank = 38/186
Age Group = 35-39M
Age Group Rank = 8/31
Pre-race routine:

Got up, had an oatmeal bar, some coffee, and headed to event.
Swim
  • 14m 9s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got in the 'washing machine' a little bit early. Grabbed, kicked, swam over, etc. Started to lose breath control and had to tread water for ~5 secs to regain composure. After that a pretty average effort.

Hey, two years ago I couldn't swim more than a lap.
What would you do differently?:

Start front row, outside.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Fumbled watch with cold hands and couldn't get helmet on because the strap around back of head was tightened all the way down.
What would you do differently?:

Test helmet before hand. Figure out how to put watch on after leaving T1.
Bike
  • 35m 39s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Feel pretty good about this. My plan was to push a little harder than usual and worry less about run and just see what happened.

Got passed by a few guys but did pretty well and passed a number of other toward the end. Started to get passed by the FOP 40-49 guys who started 3 minutes behind me toward the end of the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Felt good.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Not much problem here except had to pause to get left heel inside tennis shoe - back of shoe folded down, costing me a little time.
Run
  • 22m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

This hurt immediately.

Got behind two guys early (not in my AG) and decided I'd stop thinking about the pain and just match them. Another guy passed me about a mile in and started talking to his buddy right in front of me... he was in my AG. I hung on. Two men in my AG blew by about halfway through but I had no chance of keeping up. Finally two miles in I was able to outpace the rest of my little cluster and beat them comfortably on the climb.

About a quarter mile from the finish I thought I saw the final turn and went to kick to the finish and realized two things: (i) That was not the finish, there was still a 1/4 mile to go, and (ii) I had no kick. That last minute and a half sucked.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I spent the whole time wondering why I couldn't make myself go any faster, afraid I was dogging it, but when I had no kick at the end I decided maybe I was being a little hard on myself.
Post race
Warm down:

Eat orange. Drink water. Try not to be sick. Talk to Shane Schantzenbach, the fireman I met at Gold Rush when we both 'podium'd' in our AG last year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should work on transitions. Feel decent otherwise. Was hoping I could squeeze out a little faster bike.
