Subject: Sprint to Oly - Nutrition,,,,,,,,,,,

Signed up for my first Oly next this (gulp) month.  Around 3 hours is goal.  I've done 3+ hour rides, but only sprint races.  Haven't yet thought about nutrition.  Just guessing out of my a$$, figure I'll be :28 for the swim, 1:30 for the ride and 1:00 for the run.

Plan was to have breakfast of PB and honey, gel beforehand, some sports drink

On bike 1 gel at beginning, 1 at 1:00, sports drink throughout.  Should I break these up?

Bring 1 gel on the run just in case.

thoughts?  criticisms?

Just a couple of questions: What is the temperature expected to be during the race? You also look like a big guy, do you sweat a lot? Have you been using gels and a specific sports drink in your training? Do you know how your stomach will tolerate your planned nutrition? Do you know what sports drink is going to be used on the race course?

I'm a super clyde and I sweat buckets. For me on a 90 min bike ride I go through 1 hammer gel, 1 bottle of sports drink and 1 bottle of water w/ Nuun tablet in it. But because I'm heavy and sweat a lot, my specific hydration needs are greater than the average person.

Well I just did my first tri(an oly) a couple weeks ago and I had a cliff bar and gatorade for breakfast, on the bike I had one bottle of water and another of my GU2 O  powdered drink mix and took a gel about mile 10 of a 25 mile ride, and on the run I took powerade and water at every station of the 10K. It was hot but I actually was over hydrated I think? Hope this helps some

Yup, sweat like a p.i.g. pig.  Temps should be in the hi 70s, it's at the so cal coast, but I will still have salt stains on my shorts.  I use the same gels and drinks in training as in races, so my stomach is fine.  On a 3 hour ride, I usually do 2 gels, 2 sports drinks and a clif bar thrown in there.  Course supplies water, so that's OK.

thanks to both for the input

For Wildflower I had oatmeal, a slice of bread with peanut butter, coffee, and a water bottle of Gatorade for breakfast. Had one and a half bottles of Gatorade and three gels on the bike with some water at the aid stations to wash them down, and a half gel heading out of T2. Wish I could have taken in more calories early in the run, but my stomach wasn't up for it. FWIW, I'm a slender guy, 6'4" 182.

I wanted some variety so I had four gels taped to the top tube of my bike. Climbing up Lynch Hill somebody yelled "nice buffet on the bike!" Made me laugh.

For an Oly, do your normal pre-race routine, take one sports drink for the ride, and drink the water handed out on the run. I'd be surprised if you need two bottles of liquids on the ride. If you do need that second bottle, grab it on the ride, don't start with it.

I think your nutrition plan sounds dead on.

From the look of it, I'm about your size and our times are very close. On both of my Oly's I went through exactly what you have planned. I'd certainly have the second bottle handy in case it's hot. We bigger guys can really go through the fluids when it's hot, and really is an extra pound really going to matter when you're around 215lbs. with bike to begin with?

The only thing I would do is practice it in training.  Then you know if it will work in the race.  Do some bricks.

Why not take the second bottle out with you? (I'm assumming two bottle cages) Just curious.

You may want to do a sweat test in similar weather to determine how much you should drink...you may be surprised how you may need to drink. I went from drinking 20-24 oz an hour to 35 in a year.

Best way to do it is weigh yourself dry and naked before your workout, workout, keep track of how much you drink. After your workout, weigh yourself naked and dry, and see how your weight changed. 16 oz of drink is a pound...calculate if you took in enough or if your weight dropped how much extra you should drink.

I aim to take in about 250-300 calories an hour depending on the weather. I found I was not getting enough electrolytes and now drink less water and mostly straight Gatorade and with taking in 35 oz an hour the calories work perfectly no more gels and the like.

Like others say practice it and see how it works. Key for me is to get enough in during the bike if you get behind it is nearly impossible to catch up.

Have fun!
