Subject: Race Back-2-Back Wknds?
Hey gotta a couple of questions about races back to back weekends.  This is my first season racing so I'm looking into which races will allow me to achieve my best potential.  I finished my first sprint May 28 in WA with a 59:04 time, so I'm feeling pretty good right now.  My main Question; I have a 70.3 Aug 5 in Boulder.  It's my only A-race this year so I want to do well.  Would racing two Sprints the two weekends prior hurt my ability to race well for the 70.3?

Did a sprint a week before I did a marathon and it did not seem to hurt but after racing 3 of the last 4 weekends my body could use a rest

Probably not the best idea.  You won't die, but I doubt you'll toe the line at your HIM at 100%.  Much more conditioned athletes could probably get away with it and still get "close" to 100%.

Maybe go for the sprint 2 weeks out, but I would be hesitant to race the weekend before if you really want to do your best at the HIM.

I'd say do it.
A Sprint is nothing. You can race a Sprint today and be fully recovered and ready to race again in two to three days - tops.
If you're actually conditioned and in shape for the HIM, a Sprint will just be a short, intense workout for you with transition practice.

Hmm based on your last sprint you seem to be fairly competitive.  20+ average on the bike at your first sprint is not bad at all.

I would be afraid you might go too hard the weekend before and not be recovered.  I agree with taking off a weekend in between the sprint and the HIM.

Should probably be fine.

I might take the weekend off racing before an A race.

But I generally race back2back weekends April-August and my body has plenty of time to recover during the week

Thanks for all the feedback.  I'll probably just volunteer at the Sprint the weekend before to focus on the HIM and study some of the elite's methods.  Maybe learn a thing or two.

The week after, yes. The week before, nope! Especially after you've probably put all your focus and hard work into this 70.3! You would hate to get 1/2 way thru the bike leg and get that, I screwed up feeling. It would probably weigh on you, and things could unravel for you mentally, in a hurry..especially if this is your 1st HIM.
