Sunny
Total Time = 1h 37m 38s
Overall Rank = 85/164
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 16/25
Pre-race routine:

Got up before the alarm went off. Breakfast was 2 muffins, 2 small cups of coffee, and a cup of OJ. 5 minutes to the event after we loaded bikes.

Picked up timing chip, race numbers, and race shirt. Set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Quick ride to make sure the bike was OK. 2 minute swim warmup.
Swim
  • 15m 53s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tough, tough swim for me.

Started mid-pack and spent most of the first 200 yards fighting for position. Never really got into any kind of rhythm. Kept wanting to lift my head during my rotation to breathe. Got kicked a couple of times, but never lost goggles.
What would you do differently?:

Practice OWS.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Put on shoes, then got on bike. T1 included about a 200 yard run from the lake to the bikes. They had a wading pool to clean off feet (nice touch).

Helmet, bike shirt, glasses all went on smoothly. Gloves went on once I was under way.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more.
Bike
  • 52m 10s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 18.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Wind. Was able to pedal at 23-24 mph for about 5 minutes (when we didn't have a headwind.) Probably passed 15-20 people on the bike. According to my bike computer, it was 17.1 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Bike went almost exactly to plan given the extra distance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Pretty good T2 (for me). Need more practice.

Scuffed one shoe when I took my foot out, but otherwise, just like I planned.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Run
  • 25m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Seemed slow, and my shins were hurting a little, but I'm happy with my time/pace.

Skipped the water at most of the aid stations during the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Run was a little faster than I expected (which made up for slower swim and bike times).
Post race
Warm down:

Finished my gatorade, drank a bottle of water and cheered the other runners on to the finish.

Was there to see WSM9363 finish, but didn't get a picture.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim, bad genetics.

I expected to finish in 1:37--1:40, and I finished in 1:37:38 in spite of the bad swim and long bike.

Event comments:

The race was very well run, but I was disappointed at the attitude of most of the other participants. Nobody was encouraging people either on the bike or run (I did). Nobody hung around the finish line to cheer on strangers (a few would cheer for people they knew). Even at the awards ceremony, once people got their awards, they disappeared. There was literally nobody else around for the last awards.

Congratulations on meeting your goal (and almost beating it!)
Good start to the season.
That's too bad about the other racers not helping/encouraging others. Oh well. You still did extremely well! Congratulations!

NICE JOB!!!!    Bragging rights are priceless...

By "mowing the lake" I assume you mean it was weedy?

Hey bro

Here are your AG ranks.
Swim 14/25
Bike 15/25
Run 20/25

I figured those out since they didn't have them.  And don't worry bragging rights will come back to the right place soon enough.

Hey where is the DETAIL, goodness looks like I am reading a cliff note.

Uhmmm...OK...

Had dinner at a local steakhouse Saturday night. The waitress pegged us as brothers right away. Went back to the hotel and sorted out my gear. Went to bed about 10:30. Got up about 4 to pee (for the first time).

Pre-race: once Scott and I got set up, we chatted a little with a couple of guys setting up near us. Went over, back over, and back over again all of my gear for the race. Enjoyed the beautiful morning and the excitement of racing with my brother. Peed about 3 more times.

Swim: Donned my goggles and the striking purple swim cap they provided for us old guys. We started in the second wave, five minutes after the young guys. The lake was right in the middle of a horse racing track (which was pretty cool really). After we exited the water, we crossed a timing mat, ran across the dirt track to the transition area.

T1: The volunteers were offering drinks as we came into T1 (No thanks, I drank enough during the swim). Since I hadn't practiced getting into my shoes while riding, I put the shoes on, clicked through the concrete transition area and across the second timing mat, then got on my bike. Skipped socks since it was a short race.

Bike: Lots of turns. With my swim performance, I had plenty of people ahead of me when I finally started riding. My plan was to hammer 20 mph the whole ride, and hope for the best on the run. I got on the aero bars and just stayed there. Drank 1/4 of the bottle of gatorade about mile 3. As I started reeling people in, I tried to say something encouraging to everyone I passed (and those people who passed me). About 4 miles out, I had an older (than me) guy pass me on an old, red schwinn. We passed one or two more people, and I re-passed him and started pulling away. Drank a little more about miles 8 and 10, and started working on a gel at mile 12. Drank a little more as I got close to T2 (left about 1/3 in the bottle). Pulled my feet out of my shoes as I got close to the building (looking very silly when my shoe scraped the ground). Tried to say "thanks" to the sheriff's deputies and volunteers out on the bike route.

T2: Crossed the mat, tried to toss my gel wrapper in the trash can as I ran by (missed). Got to my rack and slid my bike back into place. Left my helmet on the aero bars, slid my shoes on, pulled the laces and headed out. Grabbed a cup of water as I crossed the timing mat.

Run: Shins were sore, but otherwise, my legs felt fine after the bike. I wasn't really tracking my running pace, but had people passing me pretty much the whole time I ran. I noticed that some guys were starting to run cooldowns as I headed out the parking lot. Skipped the water at Mile 1 (I was thinking I might have to pull off to the side to pee) and felt pretty good about the race so far. I checked my watch, and knew I was going to make 1:40 without too much trouble. Skipped the water at the turnaround (mile 1.5) too. Once I made the turn, I started watching for Scott, figuring that he was not too far behind. Somewhere around here, my shins quit hurting. Got to the mile mark (mile 2 for me, 1 for the outbound folks) and started clapping and cheering for the people headed towards me. Saw Scott just past the mile mark, so I knew I had him by more than the 10 minutes I spotted him. Started high-5'ing the outbound runners. I wasn't paying attention to my watch much after the turn. Got back to the parking lot, and realized I'd be closer to 1:37 than to 1:40 (yea!!).

Oh, one more detail...

About 2/3 of the way through the ride, we come by a pasture with a couple of horses. One of the horses starts running with us along the fence. He could tell it was a race and wanted to be part of the action!

A little competion's good for the soul...is that what they say? Nice race! It looks like you had a great swim! I'm close to that area, I've heard about those races before.

Excellant race!

Your training shows as you knew what you were capable of!

Nice work on being faster on the run than expected....just the way it is supposed to be done...awesome!

Glad you have the upbeat supportive triathlete view of racing...weird how others don't!

Fun times to race with your brother. I'm doing a tri with my brother in August (his first), plus my son, daughter, and nephew! It will be an experience as the whole rest of the family will be there cheering us (& others) on.
