This is how our civil liberties have been eroded and are being eroded over time.   It is a pernicious road we are going down.   We would not tolerate all our rights being taken away all at once.   We would revolt.   But if our rights are taken away one at a time, slowly, over time; we mayn't take much notice.     Slippery slopes and all that.

I'm a bit bothererd by the notion that this was referred to in 3 digits and not 2 digits.

If you want to do a little experiment....send me your name, and ANY address you ever used.  I'll send you back every single relative of yours, every credit card you've ever owned, every loan you've ever had, every job you've ever had, how much you made the last quarter, the same on your wife....or GF if you lived with her, every car you've ever owned, oh yeah....the same on all your relatives.  If you don't want to try that.....just drive by while we've got a "plate reader" in use.....I can get all that without you giving me anything. (note that NOTHING I wrote has anything to do with criminal history).  We've given that up in the "information age".....right under our noses.  

I'm  no conspiracy theorist....I can say that I have never seen it abused....but it can be, bet that!

Criminal Records are public information, are they not?

I'm torn on the issue - one the one hand, it sucks that cops can see all this info so easily...on the other hand, it's a great tool to have when you are trying to identify and work with criminals.  I just watched a show on Discovery where an escaped murderer (in the 80's) was captured on 2 different occasions, booked into jail, but he used an alias, and they let him go.  There were no finger print databases and access to all the information they have access to now.  That almost certainly could not happen today. 

As for the op's original issue.....what is important is that SHE was not offended, and SHE is comfortable with it, and SHE is now friends with this cop and his wife.  

I don't know.  I can see the medical history on a great deal of American's.  I have yet to search anyone out or see who has what condition.  Just cause we have access doesn't mean we do stuff with it.  I am not all that concerned about it.  And if a cop wants to look me up to make sure he is not putting himself in a situation that puts his career (or life) at risk, have at it.  As long as they are not doing it for other causes not related to the job...

Oh I am sure there is plenty that LEO's can find. I was just making the point that we don't know how much he looked up and that some stuff is available to everyone.

Heck with an odd enough name and knowing which town someone lives in I could make a pretty good guess on their age if they have ever received a traffic ticket.
