Total Time = 1h 34m 16s
Overall Rank = 261/526
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 11/38
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 am. Coffee, peanut butter toast, half a banana for breakfast. Drove to the site. Parked, pumped up my bike tires, rode over to the transition area. Got yelled at for not wearing my helmet. Checked in, had to pay $9 extra because I didn't have my new USA Triathlon card and the race organizers hadn't confirmed the number. Set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Ran 10 minutes, biked 5-10 minutes, put on wetsuit, swam out maybe 50 meters and back.
Swim
  • 10m 51s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swam strong the whole way, kicked very little. Ran into a crowd of psychotic breaststrokers at the turn-around buoy and swam wide to avoid getting kicked in the head.
What would you do differently?:

Stash club in wetsuit to break through breaststroking pack.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

My wetsuit stuck on my heels, I couldn't get into my bike shoes, I couldn't get my shirt on. Kind of a mess.
What would you do differently?:

Probably a little practice *this season* wouldn't have hurt.
Bike
  • 51m 31s
  • 25 kms
  • 29.12 km/hr
Comments:

I used my road bike instead of my tri bike because last year the chain came off my tri bike in this race and I haven't had a chance to ride it much this year. Didn't want to chance it. Plus the road bike is soooo comfortable. Lost one of my water bottles on the course and nearly took down another rider though (OOPS!).
What would you do differently?:

Need to get back on the tri bike. The only people who pass me are the ones on much more aero equipment. And on the tri bike I have my special aerobar water bottle, which would take care of the dropping bottles in other people's way problem.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

This one went fast, no problem.
Run
  • 27m 27s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 29s  min/km
Comments:

Felt much better on this run than I usually do, especially at this race. It might have been a little cooler this year. I also saved my legs better on the swim, and rode the more comfortable bike. Didn't seem to affect my overall time much, but I really enjoyed the run and felt strong the whole way, like I could have gone much farther.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, stretched, drank a lot of water, watched friends come in and cheered for them. Several first-timers this year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of focused training, although I trained much harder last year and had almost exactly the same time, so maybe I need to train less. ;)

Event comments:

As always, the traffic on the course is a little terrifying at Pigman. It would really improve things if they could shut down traffic in the park, but it doesn't sound as if it's likely to happen. Otherwise a great event.

was your water bottle white, longish, with some red writing on it?

Good job by the way.

It was the one we got with our packets. I stuck it on my bike as a backup - easy come, easy go!

Dutchman is great. Be sure to hit Jarsma's bakery while you're in Pella. The little wooden shoe I won at last year's race is easily my most prized tri trophy.

Great job, Carrie!
