Finally, a thread! I was too lazy to start it myself. I'm getting a little nervous, especially about the swim. I think the swim start may be different this year than it was in past years, but any advice for slow swimmers?

I'll be there. Not to thrilled about being in either the 2nd or 3rd to last wave. Oh well.

The swim is very very fast.  However..be ready for some serious chop.  The weather was dicey last year the night before and kicked up the chop.  I think it is a big reason many had some serious problems last year.  some people just thought the current would carry them downriver.  That chop leveled the playing field for some.

If you are looking for the fastest current, stay to the outside (west, toward Jersey).  Also, Do NOT stand up before the exit ramp.  Your feet will dissapear into some pretty heavy sludge.  The best volunteers in the sport are at the exit barge.  Let them yank you out.

a couple of other thoughts from my experience last year.

Gear your bike properly as their is a short hill out of transition.  people were sideways last year in the wrong gear and that created havoc.  If you are decent on your bike, hammer it home after the turn around.  There are a ton of first timers and many people on the bike did not stay right....be super aware.  You may have to ride a bit defensively if you are in the later waves (as i was last year).  The hills on the bike are cake.  The hills in the park on the run can and will bite.  Good idea to run them or at least go see them prior to the race.   The part of CP that this race goes through is most definitely NOT flat.

I loved this race last year.  The run across West 72nd Street into the park is great, as is the finish.  if you are meeting family, I'd suggest meeting somewhere on the UWS outside of the park.  The finish area is a complete cluster F.  They told us last year that there would be an area to call loved ones, and there wasnt. Otherwise, it was A+.

Enjoy the race and good luck!

I'm in too! This will be my third time racing it. I'm also volunteering for the 4th time. I'll be giving transition tours on Saturday.

They've switched to a modified time-trial start, which should make it easier for nervous swimmers, since you won't be starting in a pack anymore. I think I read that they send everyone in an age group out one by one in five-second intervals.

Here are a few other tips:
On the swim, don't stand up until your feet are on the exit ramp. If you stand up too early, you'll stir up the river bottom and get this black silty gunk all over you and ruin your race photos. Otherwise, the Hudson is fine-nothing to worry about there. The current is strongest towards the middle of the river, so stay to your right if you want the stronger push, or to your left if the current makes you uncomfortable.

There are some moderate climbs and steep descents on the bike. If you're in one of the earlier waves, steal a look to your right as you head back down the highway south of 100th St. and you'll be able to see the swimmers from the later waves heading downriver. It's a cool sight.

On the run, there is an aid station right as you leave T2 and the next one isn't until after you enter the park at about the 1.25-mile point. If you're discombobulated from the bike, you can run right past it w/o stopping, but the first mile of the run across 72nd street is unshaded and hot, so grabbing some water before you start the run isn't a bad idea.

Best place for spectators, IMO is on 72nd street near the park. After you pass them, you've got about 5 miles to go. From there, it's a relatively short walk from them to the finish area. There's really no good way to watch the swim and bike.

The finish area is a zoo. Make sure you arrange in advance where you're going to meet your spectators.

One year, we took the pedi-cabs from the finish area back to transition about a mile away. It was a long wait followed by a white-knuckle ride through traffic. Never again. Unless you absolutely can't, I'd suggest walking back to transition. You can cheer on the BOP-ers on the way across 72nd.

Theses are all great tips! This is my first time doing this distance and doing the NYC Tri!  I'm so excited for it, I can't wait!!!

Sounds like the hardest part will be the run or meeting up with family afterwards lol!

If I remember correctly, there’s a “family reunion” area past the finishing chute where you get your medal, water, snacks, etc. It’s in the courtyard in front of the Central Park Bandshell and there are signs with different letters of the alphabet where you stand according to your last name to help your family find you. That’s what they had in 2011 the last time I raced—not sure if they’ll have it this year.

Thanks for the insight.

Per the race site: Age Groups/Divisions will be filed as a group onto the Start Barge.  Athletes will enter the water 15 athletes every 20 seconds.

I'll be there too - fourth time for me. Keeping an eye on the weather and hoping it cools down again after this coming weekend.

Agree with all the tips people have put out there so far. Hills on the bike are my enemy, so I remember there being two that particularly sucked.

There is not one flat piece of road in Central Park, but the toughest hill is between miles 2 and 3, followed by a nice downhill, and then a longer but less steep uphill where you can see Lasker Pool. Also, there will be tons of other runners and bikers in the park for their a.m. outing to cheer you on.

If its hot, take air out of your tires when you leave your bike at the transition area, otherwise they can overinflate in the sun and you'll come by in the morning to have to replace the tube.

So you just keep swimming to the deck and then someone will help grab you out?  Or I guess you could probably also pull yourself out?

I didn't even think it was shallow enough where you could touch the ground

Yes, you swim up to the exit ramp and the volunteers/liefeguards help you up onto the ramp. I’ve never tried to stand up, because someone told me years ago about the black ooze, but from what I understand, yes, the water is shallow enough to stand in at that point.

This is my fourth year and it's a great race.

My suggestions:

1.  Bring a pump and pump your tires race morning not the day before. Every year I've dropped my bike off in transition on Saturday you always hear gun shots aka tires popping and you know that person going to arrive race morning and have to change a flat.

2. It's about a little over a mile walk from transition to the swim start. After you get in the water if your family wants to see you, there is a path along the water they can walk along. I have used white out to make a distinct mark on my swim cap so they know who I am.

3. Do not put your feet down prior to the exit ramp. I did it the first year and it feels like your walking on a 70s shag carpet. Put your feet on the ramp and let the volunteers help you up.

4. After you exit the water there will be a photographer so smile and there are hoses you run under so you can rinse off as you run to transition. The run to transition is far from short so be prepared to run bare foot for a little less then a 1/4 mile for the men. I think the female transition is closer.

5. Easy gear exiting transition for there is a short steep incline leading up to the Henry Hudson so get out of the saddle.

6. The bike is pretty flat until you get close to the GWB it is hilly after that. I think there are 3 catagory 5 climbs. When you go through the tolls and are crossing over the bridge into the bronx take a look to the left it's an amazing view of the Hudson River and Jersey. The Bronx is all up and down hills. When you bare right and start going up you are close to the turn around.

7. It is amazing running up 72nd St. Central park is also hilly and can be humid sometimes but there are plenty of people to encourge you to keep running.

8. The finish is awsome, also don't forget to smile for your finish photo. Stop your watch and forget about looking at it or that will be your finish photo. Forget your time for a minute and just enjoy everything. They have ice cold towels and and a larger replica of an old subway token is your finishers medal.

9. Enjoy your race and the surroundings.

See everyone there,

Mark

I'm in.

Do they have a bike guy there to pump your tires in the morning? What would I do with my pump (assuming no one there to give it to)?

EDIT: I see that bike check in goes until 9pm. I'll be bringing my bike later the better.

Also, any approximate idea of when the Red Waves will start going off?

I think the wave starts are in the athlete's guide, which is available on the website.

I brought a pump the first two years, but I didn't bring one last time and I'm not bringing one this year. They have a bunch of pumps in transition (there were some zip-tied to the end of the rows of racks), as well as a bike support station with a compressor. Plus there are always friendly folks who are willing to lend you theirs. I'm all for being self-sufficient, but I have to take the subway home after the race and any gear I can leave behind is one less thing I have to carry. I always get there early, so there's not usually a wait.

Question:

I read that we will be receiving a clear bag w our race number on it that can be brought to the swim start and then truck will bring it to the finish.

Why would I want to do that?  I figured I would just come up to the swim put on my wetsuit and go.

The swim start is about a mile from the transition area, so if you want to wear shoes or bring body glide or clothing to keep warm while waiting AND you want to get that stuff back at the end, you'll want to check a bag of stuff at the swim start. I've done it before, and the bag's been pretty easy to get back at the end.

Right^^
Also, depending on when your wave start is, you might have a long wait and you might want to bring something to drink with some calories.

Speaking of...looks like its going to be a really hot day Sunday. If you're in a late wave or you're a BOP-er it's going to be blazing hot by the time you get out on the run, so be sure to stay on top of your hydration. All the more reason to make sure you hit that water stop on the way out of T2. You might even consider bringing a small water bottle with you out of transition. 1.25 miles doesn't sound like much, but it can get really oppressive on the run across 72nd st to the first aid station.

Looks like I'll probably be doing transition tours on Saturday in the yellow transition area. I'll be wearing my shiny new IM70.3 Syracuse "finisher" hat unless they make me wear some other hat.
