Pocomoke, Maryland
United States
Lower Shore Family YMCA
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 35m 28s
Overall Rank = 97/169
Age Group = F30-39
Age Group Rank = 8/20
Pre-race routine:

Had a Clif bar and some coffee. Drove to the race site and was the fourth car to arrive. Killed time by reading inside the Y since a light rain had started to fall.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike around the YMCA building. Swam a few minutes before the race start.
Swim
  • 15m 34s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

(70F-SSW10-Dew66F-Hum87%-Light Rain)

The swim was ugly. The water was warm and clear (you could see the bottom the whole time). The start was on a shallow sand bar sort of deal 10yds from shore. It caused the water to muddy with everyone so I felt like I was bake in Ohio (LOL). Anyway, what’s my problem? I didn’t settle in until the last third of the swim. I think being out of the pool for nearly three weeks has taken its toll.
What would you do differently?:

Warm-up longer. Swim in open water more often. Get back to regular pool swim asap.
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

No problem with the wetsuit or my gear.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all!
Bike
  • 44m 29s
  • 14.3 miles
  • 19.29 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike was smoking although the wind kept on changing direction so I swear we had a headwind nearly the whole time. Passed lots of people to make time for my swim. Got passed by two men. That’s it!
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Pulled on socks for the run. For some reason I chose to wear my black wool-mix socks which are a bit too big for me so I had to pull them way up and the one over the ankle chip. I probably looked like a dork.
What would you do differently?:

Make a better sock choice.
Run
  • 32m 8s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

(75F-S13-Dew68F-Hum89%-Mostly Cloudy)

The run was a straight out and back along a paved road with a little bit of a run across a soccer field at the start and finish. All flat. The wind definitely changed direction during the run as a dark storm cloud approached. Kept a decent pace and HR in range. I kept myself moving, lening forward and keeping my legs turning over as fast as I could. Pushed hard at the end with nothing left to give at the finish like you’re supposed to.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got some food and visited with other racers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor swim.

I dunno . . . "Pond swim" just sounds too much like "pond scum" doesn't it? I think we need a different phrase, something that echoes the EXTREME SPORTS fad. Let's call it . . . "intense small-water endurance" . . . or . . . "concentrated water canyoneering" . . . or . . . "tight-quarters water survival".

I think your swim was great! You had a great race. That's cool that you picked one up in Maryland!
