Total Time = 1h 11m 4s
Overall Rank = 1/67
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

two eggs, oatmeal, orange. shower and get set. Had to eat another orange and a clifbar later because of the delay with the Olympic swims we didn't hit the water until 10am.
Event warmup:

Walked 1 mile. Light stretching, 400 swim.
Swim
  • 07m 10s
  • 525 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pool was inside and kind of dark. Glad I brought clear goggles. Felt like I went out too hard but the guy on my heels in the pool was plenty of motivation to keep up the pace. Seemed like a difficult effort for that time though.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

A little bit gravelly in the parking lot where transition was. Also, the bike out/bike in timing mat was really close to the last racks (of course I racked right there) so my t1/bike/T2 splits weren't corrected until well after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice swim/bike transition. I'm still a little uncomfortable with those. Rack bike a little further back next time. It was a small transition area I doubt my time would have been that different racked in the middle.
Bike
  • 39m 35s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.84 mile/hr
Comments:

As always my bike was where I gave up the most time. Felt pretty good climbing the hills even though the speed wasn't there. Descents were fast and fun.
What would you do differently?:

Train smarter with more hill work.
Transition 2
  • 00m 27s
Comments:

A little sluggish getting out of shoes coming into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions with feet out.
Run
  • 23m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was challenging. Went out at a great pace the first two miles. slacked off a bunch at the end. Felt good at finish though. No water at aid stations only clear powerade. When the sun broke through it felt really warm on the run.
What would you do differently?:

maybe grab my own flask next time with a little water. push the last mile and finish a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

walk 1/2 mile. light stretching.

Event comments:

Overall Amber and the Lake County Rec Dept. did a great job. This is a beautiful course in one of the most scenic areas of the country. I can't complain too much though. The fast guys were in the Olympic this year so I got lucky and took home the sprint win. I think they should start the Olympic swim heats earlier. I'd like to see water at the aid stations too.

Course: Bike course took off out of Lake Co. Aquatic center towards Turquoise Lake. First part of the ride was a gradual downhill and was fast with a couple of rough corners. Long grind up to the Turquoise Lake dam the continue up those hills to a turnaround halfway around the East side of the Lake. Moderate hill all the way to finish.

Course: Loop course with shallow downhill first mile then all uphill coming back. The finish was a little strange. The trail went down through a dip, back up a steep little hill (100'), and crossed the road to an uphill finish. Definitely one of the tougher finishes.
