Sorry for your loss, but give me a break. Who in there right mind thinks the theater has the duty to post a guard at the emergency exit? Alarms on exits are not there for the publics safety, they are there to alert the business of theft. Dude's doctors... right. Warner Bros... how many Batman movies have been made??? Please. |

I think it's more absurd that they are naming Warner Brothers as a defendant. Going after the deep pockets I see. Trying to profit off a tragedy... disgusting... |

![]() powerman - 2012-07-22 6:23 AM It's a business that has the right to refuse, just like you have the right to not patronize that store. You have no grounds for volluntarily entering their establishment and choosing to follow the rules. They have no duty to keep you from getting shot. I'm not sure how it is in other states... actually I'm not sure how it is in my state... I thought all those rules were store policy... meaning not against the law. All they can do is ask you to leave, or charge you with trespassing if you don't. Honestly, I never understood the point. I mean if it is a Mom and Pop store and they are against guns well that's fine.... but all the big chain stores and malls, movie theaters... I don't get that. I always thought that was just another CYA thing libility release drummed up by a lawyer. Where as the ones that are against the law... bars, government buildings, ect., well those are against the law.
I have not read this entire thread I can say in Michigan the schools are no gun zones. The exception is if you are dropping off or picking up your child, as long as you stay in the truck. If you get out to help them with, books or band instrument or what ever, you are in violation of the no gun zone. Gun carry laws can be very tricky if they are not read. Myself I don't carry on school grounds, just in case I step out of the truck or manly since I don't feel the need. Now going into Flint...thats a different story |

Myself I don't carry on school grounds, just in case I step out of the truck or manly since I don't feel the need. Now going into Flint...thats a different story I know CCW laws vary from state to state, but I'm surprised by this because I thought one universal constant was that you cannot be banned from carrying in a parking lot. No matter where that parking lot is, if it's a school or a post office or whatever, even if the institution whose parking lot it is bans guns, you still have to be able to get out of your car and lock up your gun before entering the building. I sure would hate to think there could be a liability potential because a business owner does not allow guns in their store and posts the proper signage. But then again, people are greedy SOB's and will look for any excuse to make a buck. I know alot of the overzealous folks that carry strongly say that they won't do business anywhere that doesn't allow them to carry, but I wonder how many actually limit themselves because a business owner has made their choice. And for what it's worth, we all know the laws differ from state to state, but in MN you can carry anywhere you want (except places banned by law such as federal buildings and school buildings) and if a store owner (or movie theater) has a sign posted you can still carry there, but must leave or disarm if asked. The sign alone can't get you in hot water, there must always be a verbal request. |

I guess the attendees at Ford's Theater should have sued the theater for not having alarms, Tom Taylor for writing Our American Cousin, and the Gypsy fortune-teller who told John Wilkes Booth he would have a "grand but short life, doomed to die young and 'meeting a bad end'" for not ensuring he wouldn't assassinate anyone. |
