Swim
  • 11m 30s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim wasn't terrible but I am still slow. Someday I will put some real effort into swimming and probably make huge leaps in overall time. Started out in the middle of the group and actually did decent swimming in traffic. Was staying on my path and kind of fighting my way through. I did pull back after a while and find open water to swim in. Felt much more comfortable in open water and was able to get into a rythm.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, until I put more time into swimming it is what it is!!

Not much going on here, but still seems like I am going in slow motion!

Comments:

This was an extremely fun bike for me. I came out of the water pretty far back but it did not take me long to start catching people. I was going to keep track of how many people I passed but went by too many :)! The one thing that I found odd was that everyone I passed it seemed easy. In the past I would come up on someone and then take a while to pass. Today when ever I came up on them it was like they eased up and I flew by. Right out of the gate I was pushing hard, to the point my right quad was letting me know I was going hard. I was also feeling a bit of a pull in my right Hamstring. This concerned me some since this is the muscle that has gotten me in almost every race I pushed hard. After a short time though it eased up and relaxed so back to work. Kept an eye on the heart rate to make sure I wasn't gonig to blow up, but quickly noticed I was staying above 150. Thought about letting up but then figured that wasn't going to get me a fast time, so I went with the red line method instead. Over the past winter I had a test result on the HR threshold around 163ish, my avg HR today was 155 and the only mile below this number was the 1st mile at 145. Only found struggles in 2 areas, one being the rough section of the road and then the other was after a right turn but me headlong into a steady wind. Not a strong wind but slowed me down enough to drop that mile below the 20mph mark.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Run
  • 23m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was probably just about as fun as the bike. Coming out of transition I was passed by 1 guy and I tryed to keep pace with him but that was not happening my legs ignored me! After this I settled into a steady pace and just tried to hold it. I was passed by a few runners who looked like natural runners, but I also caught and passed several people. Just like the last race I never really got myself into trouble or where I felt I was pushing to hard. The last mile of the race was probably the only time I had to conversate with myself to maintain effort. It took a lot of grunting and grumbling but I was able to keep pace. I had been hoping to catch the runner in front of me during this span but just didn't have anything left to push. I managed to close the gap considerably coming into the last 1/4 mile but thats all I could do. Finished with a strong kick to the finish line

Congratulations, Matt! Your run off the bike was great with a negative split between mile 2 and 3. Very impressive! I anticipated reading about the post race pizza but you left that out.

Very nice race Matt!

Your bike speeds are coming up very nicely.  It must be pretty crazy to see miles at almost 25 MPH  for a few miles.  And your learning to run with the best of them.

The pictures of you receiving your AG award tell the whole story!  I'll get them to you as soon as I can but there is no question you are enjoying the moment.  And you definitely earned it!  Congrats on your first triathlon AG placement and you know we'll all be looking for this to happen frequently now.
