Join a group. I love my swim group. It used to be USMS affiliated, now it's basically the same people but USAT affiliated (also have bike and run workouts too, but the swims are the best). The group workouts are a huge motivator for me. I enjoy the challenge of trying to keep up with people who are a bit faster, and trying to implement the tips the coach is giving me - particularly trying to keep good form when I start getting tired. Also, depending on the workout and how many / how long the rest intervals are, you can really develop a nice camaraderie with the people you swim with. It's an odd social group, based mostly on breathless conversations on precise time intervals ;-)

E=H2O - 2012-07-27 3:46 PM Swim harder.

This may come across as a bit snarky to some, but it really can help. It becomes a game where the thrill is how deep I can push myself to by the end of the workout. When that concept sticks, it really works.

I really was serious as you pointed out. I'm sorry if it came across badly. I am just speaking from experience. If my mind wanders in the pool I get bored. But when I am swimming hard and focusing on my stroke, I never get bored. On the other hand in my longer marathon swims my mind goes someplace and I just swim moment to moment. Frankly, I'm not sure what I think about most of the time, but then again I am not a fast marathon swimmer. I'm sure those at the top have the ability to swim hard and focus on their stroke the whole time.

I don't think it came across badly (I don't always pick the best descriptions), but wanted to emphasize that you were serious and that it really does work.

Many have said similar things, but I'll say it a different way.  Learn a new skill.  Can you breath bilaterally?  If not, it sounds like a good time to learn....I picked this up in the off season last year.  When you first start you'll be ready for some "boring" swim time after sucking water in your lungs the first twenty minutes of a swim.

Get lost in improving your technique.  I like to pick one aspect, watch a youtube video, then focus on that one piece through out a workout (or vary it with others).

I just started picking up flip turns.  Learning flip turns is a lot of fun.  It adds fluidity to your swim and it gives you somehting to think about at each turn...execution, then analysis of the execution....how can I correct it on the next wall?  or celebrate a sweet turn....oh look at that there is the wall....turn....repeat...3200 yards already.

technique and skills.

This has some good varied workouts (for free):

I started doing the prescribed workouts from this site and I look at my workouts completely differently.  Not sure how or why, I just know it's a good thing.

When I swim in ab Olympic size swimming pool, I get into a zone, almost a meditative state. My body finds a natural rhythm. For some reason it does not happen in smaller pools.

I also imagine that I'm a dolphin swimming in a beautiful ocean.

Well structured workouts, really think about progress.  For me the real joy in swimming came once I started doing it outside.  I have a VERY hard time swimming indoors now and when i broke thru in to liking it was when i went outdoors.  I agree with the others related to harder workouts.  When you start to make lots of progress it gets really sweet.  One time you will have a realization that you just had the first swim workout of the rest of your life

BrianRunsPhilly - 2012-07-26 7:34 AM I mean in the pool, OWS is always fun because there's scenery and you can sight on various things to keep you entertained. But I really do not look forward to the pool. I don't dislike swimming, but I can't wait to get those long workouts (I am slow!) done. Any tips on making this less of a chore and more fun?

Have you tried psyching yourself up before a swimming work out? When I'm not in the mood for swimming in the pool, I watch swimming videos on you tube. When I'm psyched up I never get bored.

Lots of good advice so far, but along the lines of concentrate & learn a new skill, I'll just add that you need to somehow create/craft/adopt sets with some type of meaning that lead to improvement. Some type of element to master. one thing that just for that day you will focus on being better when you get out of the pool then when you get in. It can be anything but I like to play games like this:

200, 2 x 100, 4 x 50. Swim each set at a faster pace (ie 100s faster than 200s, 50s faster than 100s) but keep the same stroke count. (how do you do that? Gives you something to think about!). What part of your form will you adjust to travel an inch further with each stroke? How will you stroke faster without giving up technique? Does the angle of your hand impact yoru ability to swim a certain pace? Can you feel the water supporting your head...actually pressing against your face? Do you push your limbs through teh water or does the water flow aroudn your limbs? Focusing on feelings and actions and seeing how those impact your pace, or stroke count give your swim an entirely new depth.

Swimming at Mirror Lake in Lake Placid last week was very much like this. Just follow the cable and swim, not endless back and forth in a 25yd pool. But I will try the suggestions here and see what works for me.

I'm more a turtle than a dolphin.

OK, I taught a class on Bayesian analysis, I can do this Most of my tri and running club are scientists or teach college, we have some seriously weird conversations while training. We were in Lake Placid doing a run this week, my phone rings, and I switch from talking about peeing on the bike to how a project is coming that I'm doing modeling a drug into a crystal structure, and back to bike pee, all in about 2 minutes. My friend could not stop laughing. Hey, bike pee is an important topic!
Some good ideas here, maybe what I really need to do is vary my routine more. I am doing small variations on the same workout every time I'm at the pool. Being a relatively new swimmer, this is all I know.

Wait a minute.... you pee on your bike?

Do you pee on it before you get on it in T1, or after you get off in T2

It's a poisson distribution, I pee in my wetsuit.

You can't reject that hypothesis...no matter what the p-value.
