OK here is another one. I just made a big sale at work, and now the wife says I can pick out a bike for Father's day. the local bike shop has Trek's and Felt's. I road all of them and they felt great (much better than what I have now...Schwinn Premis steel).

I am not sure how much I can spend, but I am pretty sure we will have to keep it under a $1000. So my questions are:

1) The Trek 1000 starts at around $650 and seems pretty good. Is it worth $200 to get the better componetry on the 1200? and is it worth another $200 to get the 1500? I just don't know how much better each bikes stuff is? Anyone?

2) Am I better off getting the 1000/1200 and using the extra money on clipless pedals?

The Felts tiered up similarily, and when I road them, I didn't notice much difference between the levels (same as treks). Maybe subconsciosly, I didn't want to?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Scott

I would get the 1500 and clipless pedals. You get 105 and Ultegra with much better wheels and some carbon for vibration dampening.

Don't do the 1000. You are better off spending more money now than later.

i have a 1500 and it's awesome.  i agree with mnewton, don't go with the 1000 if you're serious about this sport, because you'll just want another bike later.  you could manage with a 1200, but i think a 1500 is a definite big jump up, and, again, for someone committed to tri-ing, could last you for years without a real need to upgrade.

if that means you can't afford clipless pedals, just save that for xmas or something.  i think at this point it's better to get the better bike.  you'll love it.

as for trek vs. felt, get the one that feels the best.  if you can't really tell (i didn't when i was trying out bikes because i was clueless) have the guys at the store fit you and see if they have an opinion about your body vs. the bike

Thanks for the help. I got the 1500 yesterday. It was rainy, so my first ride will be today!
