Pre-race routine:

Just a typical morning. Got up around 4:30 and had coffee and oatmeal. Finished packing up my gear and loaded the bike into the car and on the road by shortly after 7. It was about a 45 min drive to the race site.
Event warmup:

Did a very short run about 15 mins before the start.

Comments:

I pretty much just went hard the whole way. Right off the bat I was in front and I knew Billy had lined up right behind me so I wanted to go hard so he couldn't get a draft off of me. At each of the buoys I took a quick look behind me and I could see one person about 15-20 seconds down. I was hoping it wasn't Billy - turned out to be Alex.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Comments:

I don't have a specific time but it was awful. Had a hard time getting the wetsuit off and things just didn't flow smoothly. Alex got out of the water 30 seconds down but we left the park at the same time!
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!

Comments:

AP 234w. I wanted to try to go a bit harder than that - closer to 250 but it wasn't happening. I think the frequent turns and the descent that had to be coasted down lowered the average a bit.

I started out leaving the park with Alex. Initially he passed me on the first hill but I re-passed him on the flats. From there, I just rode as hard as I could. Everytime I turned a corner I looked back and Alex was always right there, I couldn't shake him! He was on a road bike with no aero bars too - really strong kid.

I was hoping to at least get off the bike ahead of Billy (and hopefully with a bit of a lead). I never saw him at any point on the bike and had a bit of a lead over Alex by the time I got to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go a bit harder but my legs didn't feel super awesome.
Transition 2

Comments:

Again, this wasn't that fast for some reason. I had trouble putting my shoes on. First time I tried putting the Kinvaras on with wet feet (such a rookie...).
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!
Run

Comments:

I forgot to put my Garmin in my transition area so I was running blind. Just as I left T2, I heard someone yell "Go Billy!" and I knew I was screwed. :) He caught me about 2 mins into the run and was gone in a flash. When I got to the first turn-around, I saw that Alex wasn't too far behind me either. He ended up catching me about 3/4 way back to the end of the loop. I stayed with him for a bit but then he started to drift ahead of me again. I did my best to just keep the effort level as high as possible. On the way back out, I saw Scott coming back in for his first loop and I knew it was going to be close for him to catch me. At the next turn around I saw what I thought was a fairly safe lead over him but I still wanted to go as hard as I could as I knew he was such a strong runner. In the end, he finished 15 seconds behind me - if it had been a full 5k run he likely would have caught me!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. That's probably the fastest pace I have run in a sprint triathlon ever.

Event comments:

I really like this race. It's a great venue and I will likely do it anytime I can.
