I actually crave it more than any other beverage and it's very refreshing after a long workout. I've heard a lot of great things about it too...I don't have an issue with cramping so I'll go ahead and give the coconut water credit! ![]() |

If you're drinking it before a workout you aren't really "rehydrating", aren't you just hydrating? Frankly I just drink it cause of marketing and it's different and new. no clue if it does what it says. |

But that's just my perspective only. Many people love it. If you are enthralled by the marketing campaign and that reeled you in, have at it. Word is it's good for you, but it's a wonder people managed to rehydrate prior to cocunut water based on what i hear. |

For electrolyte replenishment Gatorade or any other sport drink is much better than coconut water, the only thing that coconut water has going its that is a good source of potassium. If you are doing moderate exercise, you are better off sticking with water and saving the money. If it is more intense activity, Gatorate will be cheaper and far more effective. Coconut water is just the most recent trend. As far as taste i cant give an opinion in regards to the different brands, i havent tried the canned stuff. I drink the natural coconut water as i have coconut trees and that is extremely refreshing on a hot day Edited by Cuetoy 2012-08-08 9:31 AM |

However, I have started mixing some of the powdered gatorade in with it for a little of the salt. I also mix powered amino acid to help the muscles recover and energize them on long rides or runs. |

Pull into a bar, grab a couple Gin and Coconut water's maybe some jerked chicken and your good for the ride back home! Best you find a bar that is actually cracking open coconuts though, skip that bottled stuff! |

Here's one reason: it's delicious. Your research has already proven to be wrong. (Besides, for every nutritionist who says it's not beneficial you're gonna find 10 more that say it is. Just because you heard it on NPR doesn't mean it's true.) |

But they do need to realize it's not going to provide any magical powers to suddenly make you not cramp up. You are correct, drink water and eat right and you will be fine. I also happen to think it tastes like **** so personally, I have no reason to drink it. |

All basically say that coconut water is not a bad option, but not as "healthy" as the claims seem to lead you to believe. If you are exercising lightly for under 60 minutes then plain old water will get the job done. If you are vigorously exercising in hot weather or for over 60 minutes then coconut water probably doesn't have significant amounts of electrolytes or carbs to replace what you are lacking. Sure those links are to non scientific type information and there will be numerous other links talking about the benefits of coconut water but try and find scientific studies done recently that prove anything. They really haven't been done yet. Or else I am missing them and would love to be shown I am wrong. Cause if the stuff is the miracle they claim I am on board! For now, water and a banana during training are the same thing. And Gatorade on a super hot day / race will get me where I need to go and at a huge cost savings.
Well it only costs me 6 pesos/liter (what I pay my youngest to procure for me) and since it is straight from the coco I guarantee it is without any additives. So i'll stick wiht my coco water, thanks. |
