Pre-race routine:

We drove down to Santa Cruz on Friday night, and we stayed right across the street from the transition area. Woke up at 6:00AM, walked over to pickup race packets and then returned to our room to set-up our bikes. At 6:30AM, we went back to the transition area and set-up. Ate breakfast, which was a PB&J sandwich and coffee. Before the event I drank a gatorade.
Event warmup:

Got into the water, which was important to build my confidence & get acclimated.
Swim
  • 21m 1s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first ocean swim, so I was a little nervous. The waves & current presented a new experience. Too bad I forgot to start my Garmin at the beginning of my wave. The swim time include a roughly 1/4 run from the beach to Depot Park, which I managed with bare feet, but it was tough going in some parts.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep swimming in the ocean to become familiar.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Arrived at T1 and found Tim was already gone. I figured he's probably already on lap 2 of the bike course. Overall, T1 seemed to go OK, and I'm surprised it took this long. Because there was a nearly 1/4 mi run in bare feet from the beach to Depot Park, I could not put on my bike shoes with my feet covered in rocks & sand, so I rinsed my feet, which, of course costs extra time. Thankfully, the timing chip for this race was small enough that I could get my wet suit over the top of it without having to remove the chip and put it back on before leaving T1. Continued to have Garmin problems, which were likely operator headspace rather than a problem with the garmin itself.
What would you do differently?:

Practise.
Bike
  • 34m 46s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 21.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Smooth, flat course. Probably too many turns around the neighborhoods. The course was well marshalled and it's certainly the most scenic bike course I've ridden to date.
What would you do differently?:

I could have put a little more into this leg of the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Struggled with cold hands, and I experienced trouble getting my shoes tied. I must wear socks with my running shoes, so that took a little time, too.
What would you do differently?:

Practise! I must work on getting my feet out of my cycling shoes while still on the bike, dismounting barefoot & then running into T2. I have tried Yankz laces in an attempt at saving time in T2, but in the end, I did not care for them and went back to using regular laces.
Run
  • 24m 27s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I surprised myself on this run. My pace did not feel this fast. It felt comfortable, which suggested to me I could have gone faster.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, picked-up some fruit, and eventually a couple slices of pizza when it arrived.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim suckage knows no bounds. With that said, familiarity with the ocean will help in future swims.

Good job.  This was great practice for the Big Kahuna in a few weeks.
