The preceding link is updated daily with water temps in the lake! Already wetsuit legal and it should only get better in the next couple weeks!

No one else excited by this? I hope the lake drops well below the 76 degree mark as i think I might overheat in a wetsuit at that temp

That's a great swim but man, you take a beating. I got beat on the entire way. It never let up. I actually had an honest to goodness good ole' street brawl black eye when I got out I got nailed in the face so hard so many times.

Great race though, but the swim is a real slugfest. Took a heel to the gentlemen too. Ouch.

I would say most people have no idea that IMOO is held in Lake Monona. You'll probably get more reaction in the IMOO thread and IM forum.

Watch out for the snakes.

yup snakes are a real b*tch. but all that aside it will be wetsuit legal and this debate goes on every single year. People worry all summer because the lake is above the legal temps. then boom late august early september hit we have 2-3 nights below 50-60 degrees and what happens, its 72 come race day. no need in spending extra energy worrying about this, instead direct it at how you will fend off this pesky snakes.

Ok I'll bite.  Is there a lot of species of snakes in that lake?  Just wondering since I'm volunteering this year so I can race IMWI next year.

I showed my wife the IMWI video and she said she was having a heart attack watching the swim portion of it.  She's already worried to hell and it's still a good year away.  I look forward to watching the start and having my jaw hit the ground this year!

I wish they would lower the wetsuit temp to 68F, but I'm also one of the few who is upset when the swim is cancelled. I don't even swim fast, I just enjoy it.

I have mixed feelings about this.  Prior to this year I did 100% of my OWS with a wetsuit.  Since it was so doggone hot this year, I started doing OWS in just tri shorts or square leg shorts.  It was refreshing.  I felt a lot more loose in the water - although my times were not quite as speedy.

Knowing that I'll likely be wearing a wetsuit for IMWI, is reassuring (I'm not exactly a fan of cold water), but it makes me wonder what the experience would be like if we all had to leave the neoprene on shore.

I LOVE SNAKES! Can't wait to swim with then slithering all over me!
But in all seriousness there are snakes in every lake. This whole snake thing is just a viral practical joke started on ST.
Quite funny actually but this thread was suppose to be about water temps not snakes.
Water temp discussion seems to be only slightly less popular topic than the snakes in relation to IMOO!
To the previous poster who seemed irritated by people worrying about the temp, why worry about what I worry about?
And, I was simply posting some nice confirmation from the usgs that the water temp is already wetsuit legal for those wondering.
Getting really excited about coming up for IMOO

I think this is directed at me, but I wasn't irritated by you worrying about the temp, I just would like to see wetsuits be used more for cold and less for buoyancy. Certainly a little bit of hijacking, but not irritated. I'm sorry if it came off that way.

I do get irritated when the swim gets cancelled and I'm deafened by the 'triathletes' screaming like they won the lottery.

got kicked in the goggles so hard on that swim last year, my goggle super-suctioned to my face and felt like it was pulling my eyeball out of the socket!  I didn't want to slow to fix it because i would lose valuable position I already fought for.

Tips:

start towards the front.  no matter how slow you think you are, you are actually probably fast compared to most.  and you'll spend too much time fighting for real estate. and treading water.  it sucks.

unless there was a change since last year, you should only have to go around the corner bouy's.  when you are in the straightaway, you can go to the inside of the bouy line and be swimming in wide open aqua.  research this rule.  i did this on my second lap after remembering someone's tip halfway through the swim. it still backs up when you get to the corner, but its heaven during the straighaways!

Lake Delton dropped quite a bit for Wisconsin Dells, so Monona should be no problem given the extra time.

And definitely beware of the AES since it was so warm earlier in the summer.

No! Please don't do this. Seriously, this is why these huge open water swims can cause such chaos. If everyone does this think of the implications. I'm not sure if it's worse to be swam over or to do the swimming over, but neither are a very good option.

No problem and I get what you were saying I also apologize if came off as overly aggressive!
I'm just super excited/extremely nervous for my first IM.
I am in the same boat as you I think as far as the swim goes. I have no doubts about my ability to do the swim at what i feel is a good pace (1:40/100m) without the wetsuit. But would much prefer a cooler lake temp were I could add the benefit of a wetsuit and save my energy for later in the day and not worry about over heating.
I did an Olympic race last year where the water temp was barely legal and the air temp was in the mid 80s at the start and I wore a wetsuit and overheated on the swim and felt it for the entire race.
Good luck to all who are racing IMOO!
Hope to meet some of you there

No worries, I just worried I had come off a little angry. I'm dreading going back to my regular pool that is kept at 82 after getting to swim in the pool across town that is kept at 77. But I guess 82 is better than the 90+ that the lake is right now

Hope you have a good race.
