I just finished reading a book called Slow Fat Triathlete by Jayne Williams and thought it was great! It takes a very lighthearted look at why someone like myself who is 25 to 30 lbs overweight would do a triathlon. It also does a very good job of explaining what it really takes to get the starting line of your first triathlon. I loved it and plan to pass it on to all my friends who say " I could do a Triathlon BUT........

I found it at Books-a-Million so it should not be to hard to find if anyone wants to check it out.

Darrell

It's one of my faves!! I find myself quoting it to my brother, who is training for his first tri this summer... "Dude, you looked totally aero on your swim!"

Hey wait a minute, I AM the brother.!  The SFT book was my main reading intro into the wonderful world of tri.  A great book, Jayne Williams is a great inpiration too!  Full of good info for the absolute beginner, not unlike BT too.

Awesome book - I loved her sense of humour and chill attitude. Even if you're not particularly slow or fat, its an entertaining read if you're new to triathlon. I bought it after another one (i dont even remember what it was called) and I found it to be so much more relatable! She explained the things I didnt get and made me laugh. Good times

I also loved her advice about always thanking the volunteers as you go and taking the time to really enjoy what you're doing...while being as not-slow as possible that is

Cheers,

Megz

I read this book over the Christmas holiday this year and it was a huge inspiration to getting started. I was laughing out loud on the airplane for some parts. I have plugged her book before and would plug it again...

Not sure you want to buy it... she has a website too with a couple excerpts.

www.slowfattriathlete.com

I also loved her description of "Post Race Stupids"... I get them after some long workouts where I start giggling hysterically at absolutely nothing... to the point of tears. That is usually when my husband pulls over at the nearest gast station and buys multiple chocolate bars for me to get my blood sugar up again.

Can't wait for her next book!

Uh, make that a brother-sister pair! I started last year after volunteering at a local all-women's race the year before (hey, those ladies look a lot like me, maybe I can do that too!) and racinmason started hearing the voices after jockstrapping (I think I'm using that right) my first ever event. WAY more fun with family involved! Unfortunately for me, he already both bikes and runs faster than me (there is a reason I read the SFT book )

My sister-in -law (who is a member here too) turned  me on to this book and I loved it. My husband and I read it together and laughed our ****** off.

She has a great style of writing and is very funny!  I love the parts about putting a wet suit on and using lubes!  She's a hoot.

I loved this book too. When I first started, 2 months after giving birth, I was FAT. I ran every agonizing step saying over and over to myself, "I am a slow fat triathlete. Everyone at their breakfast table watching me slog along is NOT doing what I am"

I even emailed Jayne and she emailed me back, twice, with great words of encouragment.  Now, 18 months later, I am no longer fat, but still a bit slow. But it doesn't matter, because most of all, I love this sport and I love myself!

Well you all have just lifted my spirits and self-tri-esteem considerably.  I was just posting on the biggest challenges thread that being slow and sucking prevents me sometimes from actually training because I feel bad about how slow I am.  But I feel so much better now.  I sometimes forget why I started doing these things, and how I enjoyed every moment of my first 2 sprints last year and I'm smiling in all the pictures.  Thanks for letting me know that it's okay to still be slow even beyond my first season when I could plead inexperience.  I should definitely check out that book!  Ya'll are awesome!

Slow is relative.  As long as you're doing your best and having a good time that's what counts.

Come check out my logs if you want to see slow.

Rhonda,

Thanks for sharing your story! It was so inspiring and brought tears to my eyes!  I have sent the link to a dear friend, who has fought with her weight for 31 years. I hope you inspire her to fitness as well.
