Total Time = 59m 20s
Overall Rank = 25/80
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/12
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 6:00 and had a banana and bagel with blackberry butter. Finished getting things together and left around 7:00. I live only 15+ min. from the event and picked up my packet the night before. That was very handy, because I still felt a little rushed.
Event warmup:

I ended up parking farther away that I expected so I warmed up by running back and forth to my car. Really not a bad warm up. I did about 4 strides while I was at it. I did get a quick swim in, but after getting out of the water the upper 50s felt like upper 40s.
Swim
  • 09m 18s
  • 457 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

I always feel like I'm going to die when swimming in competition. Apparently I need to seed my self high in the start, because I'm constantly trying to avoid people for the first 100-200m. Doing this really wears me out. By the end of the swim I had NOTHING in the tank. Not a good race strategy. I'm getting worried about doing 1,500m in August.
What would you do differently?:

Start in the front of the pack and see what happens. Also, a little positive thinking might keep me from FREAKING OUT.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I'm getting better here, but still have a long way to go. Things seemed smooth, but I was still 7th in my division.
What would you do differently?:

Get better equipment. Mountain bike shoes slow you down a bit. Also, keep working on transitions. I spend very little time doing that, but would cut 30 sec more off my time in T1 and T2.
Bike
  • 27m 47s
  • 9.2 miles
  • 19.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Unusually slow race for me. (Okay I've only done 2, but still.) I didn't taper for this race since it was a "C" race and did a really hard/long workout 2 days earlier.
Time also included T2
What would you do differently?:

Not eat a Gu at the end of the bike. I tasted it for the rest of the ride and all of the run. I almost lost it in the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 20m 58s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pretty tired by this time with "dead" legs. I did better than I expected and hit my HR and time goals. The LT workout I did two days earlier was still in my legs. It is nice to see that my running is getting back into shape.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat that Gu!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Stumbling to get a bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not tapering.

Event comments:

Overall a very good race. I really enjoyed meeting tliles and GennX. It is always a pleasure hanging out with Writebrained.

Course: Out and back rural roads. They changed the course a little bit, which was a warm welcome. I rode the course a week earlier and was really concerned about a turn that they eliminated. Good job. I'm thrilled with the shorter course, since it resulted in a safer course.

6:59 miles on "dead" legs huh .... I agree with writebrained you're too modest!!

Even though you claimed that you felt like you were going to die in the swim, that's still not a bad time. I saw that pack rounding the first buoy and it looked pretty rough ... like you said afterwards, it's hard to draft when you're just getting kicked and hit!!

If this is "C" race performance for you, I look forward to seeing how well you do in Springfield!!

Cheers!
