Pre-race routine:

Lets go back a few days....

I rearranged my schedule and did my runs during the first part of the week and saved my bike rides for the end of the week. However I had to do my long bike ride on Saturday and it was around 45 miles. My legs were pretty good but a little stiff Sunday morning.
Event warmup:

Well we all warmed up nicely standing around for an hour waiting for the race to start. Yup 1 hour behind schedule. It was heating up and they ran out of water at the starting line - little did I know water was going to be an issue. I thought I would just use the water stops on the course to stay hydrated but I wish I had brought my hydration belt.....

Comments:

Heres my splits I think it tells the tale:
mi Pace (min/mi)
1 8:14
2 8:28
3 8:16
4 8:31
5 8:45
6 8:48
7 7:33

I started off fast, well fast for me that is...LOL. Then I fell into the just hang in there mode for for mile 5 and 6. After mile 6 I picked it up and felt pretty good crossing the finish line.

I think when I hit mile 4 my legs were starting to slow down and the lack of water was catching up to me. Also my 3 year old had an accident in his bed the night before so we had a visitor at midnight. Around 4:30 I gave up trying to sleep in a king sized bed with a wife and a 3 year (too many elbows and feet) and took the alarm clock into another room for about 3 hours of sleep.

Really add it all up and it should have been a disaster but it was a Personal Record!
What would you do differently?:

More water and I think if I had one I would have used an energy gel......really no excuse in the future not to bring my own.
Post race
Warm down:

Lot's of water oh and a beer - a new microbrew was opening up and they had a keg. Hey I'm only human....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

45 miles on the bike on Sat, not enough sleep, or enough water......ugg a lot

Event comments:

The race was a disaster in planning and execution. This year they added a 5K and I think they greatly under estimated the logistics of the pre-race registration. They were simply way understaffed and not organized. I could go into the nitty gritty of all the details but I got on the bus at 8:30 to go to the start (registration was supposed to close at 8:30) and the table was still mobbed with people. I knew the race was going to start late but I didn't expect an hour late.

They had 2 water stops which I guess it pretty average for a 10K but I felt like they didn't anticipate the weather or the late start and really a 3rd stop would have been really nice to have.

Nice job Adam!!  If you weren't taking any gatorade you may have even got away with using 2 gels.
