Lakes Country Triathlon
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 59s
Overall Rank = 32/218
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 4/11
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast of waffles, butter, syrup, banana, coffee and water.

Drove to tri from cabin, got a good parking spot, filled tires (disk rear and training front as I can't get air into my Hed race front). Got setup with a decent spot in tran. Checked in, got body marked, and organized tran area.
Event warmup:

Rode bike about a mile to check things out, walked/jogged/ran about a mile with Jason, then swam maybe 50 yards before swim start. New goggles worked GREAT!
Swim
  • 12m 22s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. Best draft for me ever I think, but did go off course on the way back a bit following then correcting, but happy with 1:25 per 100 pace. My ankle strap seemed very loose and iffy before the race, and sure enough it fell off somewhere early on in the swim. I think it was retrieved and volunteers looked for me at the swim exit and put it back on. Way to go volunteers!
What would you do differently?:

Swim straighter after the last turn and maybe put electrical tape on my ankle strap to help it stay on.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Good tran. Didn't push overly hard but time was decent. Saw Jason and Jim and Anna and said hi.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 44m 46s
  • 17.3 miles
  • 23.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Best bike split ever for me at 23.2 mph. I pushed it hard on the flats staying close to 25 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, except wished I had got my front race wheel valve fixed as the deep dish would have helped a bit on the fast cousre.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Solid tran.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 29m 37s
  • 3.9 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

It hurt. I had only run like 20 miles the whole previous month due to travel, fatigue after a huge, hard hike in Ca near Lake Tahoe and calf tweak about 2 weeks prior to race day, so was very happy I could finish without injury and manage this pace. Was actually running about 7:10 pace until the middle of mile 3 when I faded a bit. Jason paced me, which was fun and helped drag me in as I was hurting pretty bad and wanted to walk.
What would you do differently?:

Run more and especially not tweak my calf 2 weeks prior to the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with Jason, got water and food, talked to Jim and Anna, and met Brett Lovaas who was the overall winner by over 2 mintues and a MN Tri stud.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury and lack of running the previous month.

Event comments:

Love this race, favorite of the year! We had perfect weather. Smaller race this year as I think Maple Grove has sucked a lot of the TC racers away.

Holy cow those are some fast splits to not make podium.  Tough competition this year.

Thanks for the kind words.  This race does bring out some fasties as it is the last in the Tri Minnesota Series and just a great venue and well run race.  Much smaller crowd this year due to Maple Grove Tri on the same day, although still plenty of speedsters it seems.

Nice job!!!  It was a good race this year, and you are right, some very fast people for the smaller turnout.
