Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: Good luck at Hyvee this weekend Thanks! 4 of us that I workout with from Topeka, Pete, and Snyderman are the locals I know competing in the championships. Should be plenty of people to party with after the pro races. (Or even before.) |

If thats right he had the fastest time in his AG, but he isn't showing up in the results. Anyone know what happened? Hopefully he got the hardware and it's a glitch with the results on the website. |

Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: Good luck at Hyvee this weekend Not a glitch. Just some very excited referees tat decided to hand out over 20 penalties due to a huge "peleton" that formed around me and one other local racer about 15 miles into the bike. We tried our damndest to not break any rules in the mayhem but each got DQ'd. I had the option to either pound it to the front and burn my legs out, or drop out of the back and essentially quit racing for a while. Instead, I kept racing and tried not to draft or block, or do anything wrong. But I guess the refs decided otherwise for most of us in the group. I even spoke with the other local guy as it was happening and we were each trying not to do anything wrong. Oh well, I am still 6th in the age group championship in my mind -- just not the record books. Great learning experiance and will motivate me for next year! Will also be a great motivator for off-season training! It was a first class event and will hopefully qualify and be back next year!!! |

Crazy fast time and a faster swim than 7 of the pros. No matter the outcome, you had a great race. |

Had a similar thing happen to me except I ended up soft pedaling and fell back to escape a mini peloton forming near the first out portion on Army Post Rd. The number of course marshals out there was unreal. I don't know if I've ever seen that many motorcycles going up and down the course. They were everywhere. But it was a flattish course and the potential for drafting was there (not saying that is what occurred with you). That was me passing by you in the opposite direction btw with less than a mile to go. You were looking good. Can't miss the neon green! |

So the off-season will be dedicated to improving the run for next year. |

I am not saying there weren't drafting distances occurring, etc. But you couldn't really escape it short of damn near stopping. Again, lesson learned and I will know better how to handle that if it happens again. We had at least two motorcycles hovering our group fror several miles. Yep, I remember you from the run. You had a good race! heck, everyone from the area seemed to have a great race from all of the discussions I had in the finish corral after the race. |

But, the ability to ride fast and legal was very doable in this race. Of course. I did not mean to imply that they didn't call what they saw. I, however, do now understand the difference between what they see on the motorcycle and what I am experiencing in the pack. They have an objective standard that must be enforced. I now know that I either need to push forward of the pack, or back the hell out, because I thought I was backing out of situations at times only to be in the middle of some other riders in that pack that I guess I didn't handle correctly. My discouragement comes only from the fact I was honestly trying to not cheat, draft, block, or otherwise cause trouble and it cost me. Essentially, my options were to potentially blow myself up trying to get ahead of the pack, or simply stop racing for a time to see if things thinned out on their own. I can be certain I am not the first person to experience this and won't be the last. But apparently it isn't worth the effort to try and race within the pack. The thing that bothered me was that there were no blocking penalties AT ALL in the entire race and I think that was a main problem in the pack I was in. Someone would sprint around, get the wheel ahead, then slow down. Over and over again with several people. I asked the ref about this after the race and he said something to the effect of, "There wasn't any blocking by people out on the left." Well, you can block at any position on the road and it was happening on the right. I barely avoided a couple of people who passed several riders and backed off so fast after pumping hard to get past that several of us had to swerve to avoid them, much less get back 2 bike lengths aftert hey went past. The ref didn't seem to want to talk about that so I knew it wasn't worth my time. I guess what I am saying is that I am quite sure I was observed doing things I was cited for. I am also sure it was in spite of my efforts not to violate the rules. I know several others in my pack who had similar stories who also suffered penalties and I know one of those guys in particular is not an aggressive rider/racer. I will know better next time and try a difference race tactic. Live and learn to race another day. Edited by Jayhox 2012-09-03 9:36 PM |
