Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

Up early for 50 minute drive to Gulf. Wheat toast, Ensure. Sipped on Gatorade and ate a few PB crackers
Event warmup:

Ran about half mile and did some stretches. Swam for about 5-10 minutes. It was really humid....going to be a hot day.
Swim
  • 05m 49s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was rough for the Gulf. Several sets of breaking waves to get through. Not a great swim but got it done. It was short so I just pushed through. Better conditions would have been nice. I was #18 in the TT start so able to get an early start.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Had a long run from swim to my spot in transition. Fortunately it put me close to the bike in/out. Went sockles since it was a short race and that always saves a little time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. It was a good time compared to the field
Bike
  • 23m 58s
  • 10 miles
  • 25.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Wanted to push this as hard as possible and leave something for the run. Caught/passed all but 2 other racers. AP248/NP251 IF.93. I had planned on being 95-100% but it just never felt "easy" on the bike so backed off a bit. Should really hammer it in a race this short but I hoped holding back some would pay off in the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, turns out I paced the bike fine based on my run. Still need to be willing to suffer more on the bike and trust my legs that they will be able to run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Pretty solid. Lost a couple seconds getting into running shoes but rarely does everything go perfectly
Run
  • 12m 44s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Leaving transition I saw there were 2 racers ahead of me. Both had started the swim just ahead of me. I passed one about half mile in and the other with about a half mile to the finish line. Soon after that I was passed by a young guy really moving. He had a higher swim number than me so I knew he would win the overall. Continued to push hard since you never know where folks are overall with the TT start. Really pleased with my run. Pace was about what my stand alone 5k pace is.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a good run for me and I had nothing left at the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Visited with friends and teammates. Enjoyed the post race festivities.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Good effort. Was unsure how I would do given some waning motivation over the previous 2 weeks. Approx. 3.5 minutes better than previous year and swim was much rougher this year.

Event comments:

Solid race for me. Getting late in the season and I had felt flat over the last 2 weeks so decided to do the super sprint rather than the olympic. Lots of the top local guys raced the olympic and that helped my overall placing in this race . Always fun to do a short one and see whats in the tank. It was another hot day and I was glad I stuck to the shorter distance.
Team Magic always does a great job.

I'll happily trade swim lessons for run lessons.  You were moving on that last mile.

Good to meet you - I get down there now and again, so hopefully hook up for a weekend ride one of these day.
