Subject: Forgetting basic math -.- (college students?)

I took calculus AB and BC my junior year in high school and scored 5's on my AP testing. I'm now taking a calculus based physics class and we're reviewing over very... very basic "Solve for the variable" equations. Like velocity and time!!!

Dear God. I can't remember anything. I couldn't even solve a variable question on my own. I can't wait until we get into the actual calculus portion of it--I hope its as easy as I remember. I enjoy the straightforwardness of calculus, and it always clicked. But damn. It was bad. and embarrassing. Good thing I didn't brag about my calculus scores or I'd probably be labelled a fraud.

I bought Calculus II for dummies and I'm hoping it clicks in the more I read it.

You already have me beat. I took a physics class in 10th or 11th grade that involved a little bit if trig, but I've never touched calc. High school Algebra over 20 years ago and I did well in college-level algebra classes 6 years ago. I can "solve for X", but it usually involves a therapist.

I know the feeling.  I had 5 years off between calculus II and III.  I switched from chemistry to computer science with a minor in Math so I had to take a few more math courses.  I forgot things like multiplying by both sides by the same number.  Ironically the calculus part was not as hard as trying to remember basic algebra.

I'm in the same boat. I'm taking a 'basic' math class as a refresher, since I'd get my rear end handed to me when I get to some upper level classes I need next year. I had AP Calc I & II in high school. Algebra in 8 or 9th grade? Trig, then Calc? I dunno, it was so long ago.

It's starting to 'click' again, but I find myself TEACHING myself a lot in the evenings: doing extra problems and watching Kahn Academy videos.

Try watching some of those videos, they really help. Totally free and tons of topics. The videos I've watched have been under 10-15min each. I usually find one that is similar to a concept I need help getting.

Nice thanks for the suggestion! Yeah... taking a high speed math program isn't always good long-term. Impressive to all your friends when you hold a high GPA but the block inbetween is missing when you get to college lol

I agree with the algebra thing being harder than calculus actually I remember the rules and trig pretty well its just... what the hell is cross multiplication? :P Give me an integral already.

Ironically hard science (like chemistry, biology, anatomy, etc.) is a flop for me. always was and probably always will be :p

I've been having trouble remembering rules of exponents & exponential fractions...whatever they are! Ugh. Coming along, but it's taking a ton of extra studying on my part.

Hang in there!

Use a TI-89. They practically take pictures of the problems and solve them for you haha. keep it up it'll get easier. hopefully x)

HAHA! I wish! We're not allowed. All our tests are in a controlled testing room, we're only allowed a TI-30x, no graphing calc's! It's such a bummer.

My 15 year old son is coming to me with math problems that I have no idea how to solve. I look at them and know that I once knew how to do complex math but I am at a loss now.

Funny story; in Target a couple weeks ago, a back to college special, 18 hangers for $2.49. Right next to a display rack with ten hangers for $1.17. I figured it was just a math test for college kids. I wondered how many bought the 18 pack because it was a "back to school special?"

I remember almost everything but geometry. Although I will say that because of my son being in a HS engineering program I'm forced to stay on my toes. Sometime I'll tell him I am busy and will help him in an hour, then go brush up on whatever he's working on

The reason may be because you practiced and practiced math problems years ago, and not necessarily learned the arithmetic.

My suggestion:  Practice and practice your calculus problems now.  Who cares if you forget next year?? Lol.

I went back to grad school at age 47.  I had to take the PhD qualifying exams after just a semester back in school.  One of the exams I had to take was in math.  I do math all the time at work but that math is all in a pretty narrow area.  The qualifying exam was over anything the exam committee could come up with, (i.e. derive the universe, give three examples).  Math all comes back pretty fast.  In study groups, I found that I was in better shape that the younger grad students.

Trust your AP skills.  You didn't score a 5 by being dumber than average.  The math will come back.  You may be different but I really like the feeling of finding the solution to a math problem.  There is an exhilaration that drives me on to the next problem.  Good luck.

Although I took Calc in HS, and retook it in College, I struggled thru it but I passed with a C.  Trig wasn't all that bad, but I think my difficulty in Calc stems from my weak Algebra Kung Fu.
