The Nation's Triathlon
77F / 25C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 48m 29s
Overall Rank = 912/3137
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/57
Pre-race routine:

Got up early!! Wanted to make sure I got a parking spot. So up and out of the house @ 4:30am. Got to special spot and hung out in the car for about 30 minutes. Then off to transition area! Got set up fairly quickly and then it was multiple stops at the porta potties. Met another woman in my age group and then we hung out together.
Event warmup:

None other than shivering since it was a bit chilly in your our bathing suits.
Swim
  • 33m 25s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

No wetsuit. I think my sighting was just not very good. I tried to angle towards the far buoy but this wasn't a good idea since I wasn't swimming at a good body position against the current. I felt like I was swimming fine but just wasn't making good progress. Didn't ever feel terribly tired until the end when I just seemed to be fighting the water. Was way too far from bouys most of the time.
What would you do differently?:

Hold a tighter line on the buoys. Train harder for swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 28s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.53 mile/hr
Comments:

My legs felt tired right from the get go and stayed that way during the entire bike segment. Except for one brief spell. The swim took its toll. I just couldn't pedal any faster without seriously compromising the run. The tiredness was throughout my legs. Not just one area. So I had to deal with this the whole time. I also did not follow my plan of 95+ cadence the whole time (I've had results with this in the past). Love my new saddle.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on the bike. Sunday mornings around the neighborhood are in order.
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Run
  • 51m 58s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Somehow I managed to pull off a pretty decent run. Surprised given how tired my legs were on the bike. But I used my mantras --- "Strong and Steady" and "Feet are Light" to keep me going.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in a chair by the finish line for about 5 minutes. Then off for a complimentary massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't take any 'taper' days prior to this race. Some car and carpooling issues meant that I had to bike the entire way into work every day so that added about 5 miles each day or 20 extra miles for the week (an extra 25%). I think this left my legs a bit more tired than usual. I've also been slacking a bit in swim and run training ever since my HIM in June.

All in all pretty good!

Event comments:

I really like this race. It's big. I always meet new people. Venue couldn't be better. The logistics are a bit challenging and it is not really spectator friendly for folks who live in the area (unless they come w/ you @ 4:30am!!). But I guess that's what you get with an even in the Nation's Capital!!. It's really nice to have so many people come to this event from all over the country.

In spite of the tired legs on the bike, and fighting the current in the swim, looks like a great race for you.... 7th out of 57 sure ain't bad!!  I'm sure having to bike commute last week didn't help, but you still pulled it off!

Wow, your split times are impressive!  Especially with the current and some wind.  You finished really high in your AG and it sounds like this event attracted some pretty serious athletes:-)  Sorry to hear your legs didn't feel it during the bike but glad your run was such a pleasant surprise!  Well done

That sounds like a fun race.  Your run and bike are both quite impressive in my eyes.
