I signed up months ago, but I'll be there come August for my first ever full IM! Gotta figure out how to get my bike there from Hawaii, but that part ought to be a cinch compared to the training, haha. Anyway,  most of my extended family lives right across the river in Indiana, so I'll have quite a lot of cheering support on race day.

Undecided yet if I am going to stay with family or not, maybe for a few days but I think I'll make sure I'm staying at a hotel downtown on race weekend.

I have raced Florida and Louisville.  I did LOU this year.  I really loved this race and the city of Louisville. This year was one of the hottest years (I think it was about 93 degrees when I got off of the bike), but if you are fortunate enough to be able to train in the heat, then you should be fine.  There is about a 50-50 chance the temps could be very, very hot, or mild.  I think Florida's weather is much more unpredictable.

I was one of the ones who picked up a tack on the course this year.  I heard 30-40 athletes picked up a tack on the bike course.  Luckily mine was in my front tire which made things easier.  Still cost me close to 20 mins though all said and done.  Even with the tack experience, I am going back to LOU one day. Signed up for Florida again in 2013!

Good luck!

WoodrowCall, it's good to seen a fellow South Carolinian hitting up Lou!  I am from Charleston, and went to PC up in Clinton. I would be happy to share what I know about the course and my own experience training for Louisville.  Good luck!

Is IMKY a wetsuit swim? I only ask because I have absolutely zero need for them where I live, but if I do need one for the race I'd like to get some practice swims in.

Anyway, I'm going to have fun training for this because I have a HIM on June 1, so I'm going all-out on training for that, and then bridging the 12 week gap.

Is IMKY a wetsuit swim?

No. The Ohio river in August is always well above the 78 deg max.

Hey everyone!  I'm not in yet but will probably sign up late Jan / early Feb.  I have a good friend who convinced me to come back to The Ville for round 2 (Round 3 for him).  I signed up last year but had a bike problem that left me without it for eight weeks (including race day).  I was looking for an out anyway as I wasn't really mentally prepared, but I am ready to go this year.  I can't wait for training to begin.  Unfortunately right now I nursed a torn calf muscle, therefore I'm taking this time to do some weight training and a little swimming and getting fat.  I figured I will enjoy living the carefree lifestyle for a couple more weeks before I focus.  I noticed there are a couple people from SC!  That's fantastic!  Sounds like a good opportunity for quality training!  Happy Holidays to everyone!

Chris

Thanks for posting that! But when he talks about peeing on the bike, does he mean literally pee WHILE biking or getting off to take a leak somewhere? I'm just a lowly age-grouper trying to finish my first IM, so I think I'll opt for the latter.

He did mean pee while riding. Public urination is not allowed (although I saw a few guys get off the bike and pee on the course in 2011) but all the bike aid stations have porta potties

Like Brad said on Fast times at Ridgemont High said...Learn it. Know it. Live it.

The guy on these videos knows what he is talking about. I all but memorized these videos and they were very useful to me at IMKY this past summer where the temps on my bike showed 94. Do what he says and you will be happy.

Looks like 3 of us are in the same boat! WoodrowCall and I will also be doing our first HIM in Raleigh and this race will be our first IM! Do you have a training plan? We are looking at the 30 week Competitive Plan in the book "Be Iron Fit 2nd Edition". You can get a cheap electronic copy online at Amazon for $3.99. The timing of the Raleigh race fits in pretty well with the schedule in that book (If you start at the beginning of January) so it seems like it will work out pretty well!

My husband and I volunteered for this race in 2011 and we were bike catchers......And yes, we put on gloves for this task....  LOL.   On another note, I caught Nina Kraft's bike.....  She won that year.  Woo Hoo!!!!

6 weeks post op my ankle reconstruction and things are going well. rode stationary bike twice to in past couple of days to get the motions going. I have a feeling the biking will pick up real quick in the next couple of weeks. I get to start swimming in the next 2. If all goes well in the next 6 weeks I'm hoping to sign up.

I will be peeing on the bike though. I've done this in IMLP this past year and someone coming up from behind me said " I love it girl!" I don't know about all that now, but eventually I want to qualify for Kona so every moment is precious and practice makes perfect! Your shoes get really warm for a bit and then eventually you forget about it.haha! Happy trails!

Excited for the challenge ahead!

i signed up for IMLOU a couple weeks ago. I decided it was a good idea to start training. I've done a couple 70.3 but this will be my first full. Should be a great time! On a side note, it will also be my first marathon.
