Effin' A!!!!

My parent-teacher conference for my son makes me want to submit 12 charter petitions tomorrow.

I work 10-12 hour days and commute 35-68 miles each way to give other people's kids the best public education available.

Unfortunately, I cannot afford to move, break lease, nor ask my wife to leave her job so that we can send our kids to one of my schools.

I get that it is easy to not feel bad for my son.

He is smart and loves learning, but I see such a HUGE difference in his love of school from last year to this year.

He is aware enough to see that only the lowest common denominator gets the teacher's attention - be it academically or behaviorally.

Dinner time used to be a 45 minute debrief of everything he did that day.

Now, "Nothing, just a review of last year." (We are 6 weeks into the school year.)

Highlights -

Teacher complained about the number of students in class. (4-5 less than my teachers' average --- without complaining nor excuses)

"Don't have time." for a one-time request that would take 10-20 minutes.

Several statements that make it perfectly clear that she has no clue of what he does, or does not, know, after 6 weeks!

We scheduled the meeting a week ago, but she could not even bother faking it last minute.

That sucks. My wife worked for two years as an Occupation Therapist for the local school district. It was enough of a peak behind the curtain that we have decided that our children will not go to school in our district. Our oldest will start kindergarten next fall. She will attend either the neighboring district or (more likely) the private school down the road.

I don’t want to bash the public school system too much, as you appear to be a teacher, but we were very frustrated with both the teachers and administrators.

Kill 'em with kindness.  Don't back down.  It's an endless fight...you're not alone.

When all other options fail, ya just gotta raise heck.  Good luck.

I am a special education administrator for one of the highest performing charter schools in the state.

By virtue of where I live, I am the only full time administrator for my agency who does not have children or grand-children in our schools.

We literally to not employ teachers that we are not willing to assign to our own children.

I am a school psychologist still at heart.

I just signed a contract and sent a sizable retainer to a well know educational advocate in our state.  Our school district has done nothing to educate my son.  He does not have access to a Free and Appropriate Education and the school refuses to find a placement for him.

I feel your frustration.  It is a full time battle but one that is worth fighting.

Well, I don't have much to complain about this year.  Teacher is wonderful and excellent.  It will be bad breaking my streak of making the teacher cry  after 2 successful years.  Daughter is in first grade, and both the pre-school teacher and Kindergarten teacher felt my wrath.

It's your job, do it well!!! (The second Kindergarten teacher after we had our daughter moved was great.  Principal thought it was our fault.  Now that she sees what our daughter is capable of with a good teacher, we are on the good list this year.  We're like bffs.

Home school or send the child to a private school.

We are lucky enough that my wife can stay home and educate our children.  Seeing the quality of education coming out of our local public (and some private) schools was the deciding factor for homeschooling.

It was a hard decision to give up an additional 6 figures of salary but it has turned out to be well worth it.

That's great. It sounds like a good situation (where you work) for both educators and kids.

Home school or send the child to a private school.

When my wife worked for the school district, she would also do some evaluations for the private school where we are probably sending our kids, as they did not have their own Occupational Therapist. The curriculum was one full year ahead of the public schools. That was a real eye- opener.

Home school or send the child to a private school.

This isn't always an option for everyone.  Private schools that could accommodate my son cost nearly $100,000 a year.  How practical is that for a military family?  Not very.

The services my son needs could not be obtained in a home school environment.

So, do you have an option for me?  Doubt it.

My comment was not directed to you, but to the op.  And you are correct, I don't have an option for you, as parents we do what we think is best in any given situation and I don't know yours or you mine.

We have five children and live in a district where all the schools are failing.  We send them to private schools costing a great deal of money.  We are self employed and with the poor economy in our area, its tough.  Our business just hanging on, and we have been living on savings.  That said, to help keep the kids where they are, we haven't raced, vacationed, or eaten out in over a year, along with many other things. Also, I am lucky to have added a part time job.  But its OK, I have had a great ride till recently and hopefully things will start improving.  It looks as if they may.  I guess my point is that you do what you have to do to insure a good education for your children and it seems from an earlier post that you are doing just that.
