I was curious to know how many years it took you to get there and what was your progression? for example what did you get in your first IM and the progression up to when you achieved KQ or sub 10 hours.  I'm just curious as to your stories.

At least one of them made it his first attempt, 11 months after his first tri.  Don't think he'll be taking about his route to KQ and sub-10, though.  Another has been racing for years and, while having qualified before, has never actually done an IM.  So still no sub-10 to talk about.  My analysis?  Both have great athletic gifts and enjoy the work and discipline it takes to put them to good use.

Qualified on my first try at IM with a 9:57 after one year of training, which was preceded by 17 years of no exercise.  (Had been a decent runner before that long hiatus.)  Have since whittled that IM time down to ~9:30 over the course of three years, primarily by focusing on weaknesses through fairly consistent work in the pool and on the run.

Non-BT friends of mine have made similar (or better) progress over a similar time by simply putting time in on their weaker areas.  Based on everyone I've seen get faster at long course racing, it seems that intelligent consistency is the key to developing innate potential.
