Pre-race routine:

Drove to race finish where I met up with my friend Allene who shuttled me back to the start line (thanks Allene!). Picked up bib and hung out till start time
Event warmup:

Jogged around the park a few times to stay warm.
Run
  • 2h 14m 56s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good the first few miles and had to slow the pace a few times. I realized around mile 4 that I might be able to get a PR. This wasn't even in my mind as a possibility before I started. My training wasn't as consistent as last year and I feel that I am still overcoming my injuries from the beginning of the year. Miles 5 - 10, I just tried to stay at a consistent pace. At the start of mile 10, I picked up the pace and would have had the last 3 miles as my fastest except for the GIANT 1/2 mile hill at the very end. This hill shattered me - I need to look up the hill profile, but it was long and steep. This is my 2nd HM and I finished almost 4 minutes faster this time - very happy with the results!

This was a fun race - it was a "zombie run" and many were dressed up not only as zombies, but other halloween costumes. My favorite where the guys dressed up as Reno 911 cops with their short shorts! A lady with a dog was running near me for quite a while and the dog had a fake arm in its mouth - cracked up every time I saw it.

Warm down:

walked around the finish area then got in line for my tshirt and pizza. Went home grabbed and shower (by then it was snowing) then drove 3 hours through a snow storm to the cabin where family was staying. Needless to stay I was quite sore when I got there!

Found out that I missed an awesome Aurora display the night before - somewhat of a bummer but wouldn't have changed anything.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

train more consistently

Event comments:

The race was put on by the local running club. Great course! Would have been great if they had shuttles from the finish to start so I wouldn't have had to get a friend up on Saturday morning to haul my ass to the start. Also only 2 drink stations so I ended up taking my water fanny pack.

Great job on the PR! Nothing is worse than a hill toward the end of a course.

It sounds like a neat race. Thanks for sharing the details.
