Beach2Battleship Half Iron Distance Triathlon - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Wilmington, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 18m 13s
Overall Rank = 408/600
Age Group = 60-64
Age Group Rank = 5/17
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30. Bagel w/peanut butter and a glass of gatorade. Walked to T1 and layed out everything. Went back to room, took care of business, then walked to the start.

This was my 1st HIM, so I was very anxious to get started.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 28m 50s
  • 2078 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

I wasn't expecting to have a real fast swim so I started at the back of my wave. Kept passing people and felt like I got into a real good rythem. Didn't really push it....just a good solid effort.
What would you do differently?:

Start at the front of the wave and push a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 06m 43s
Comments:

No idea what I was thinking/doing. I took forever in T1. Just took my sweet time doing everything. SAt down, wiped my feet off, neatly put wet suit into bag. WHAT WAS I DOING?!?! Had no idea that my swim was so good or I would have pushed it.
What would you do differently?:

Run instead of slow jog to bike and cut out at least 30 seconds at the bike.
Bike
  • 3h 04m 16s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.23 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first half, so I took it easy on the bike. Was averaging 18.8 at 40 miles and decided to back off some. My goal was 18mph, so I hit it about right.
What would you do differently?:

Purchase a tribike and get it fit properly. I'm riding a Specialized Allez road bike with PD bars and I know my aero position is terrible.
Transition 2
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

I checked my overall time coming into T2 and realized that I was 30 minutes under my projected time. This got me moving through T2. Had trouble getting around some slower folks in the narrow chutes and ran over some fool who was changing in the area where the bags were hung up instead of in the change tent.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 34m 21s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out great!! Got my running legs after the first mile and hit the 6 mile mark in 61:xx. Visions of a sub-6 danced in my head!! Opened my second Gu at about 6.5 miles and tried to take it. I stopped dead in my tracks and was bent over with dry heaves. Tried to drink some HEED at the next aid station and it came back up. From that point on, all I could hold down was water. Slowed down to a 11:00 pace until the 8 mile mark and then the wheels came completely off.
What would you do differently?:

??????
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Unable to take in nutrition after the 6 mile mark on the run.

Event comments:

I REALLY wish that a sports drink other than HEED was available at the aid stations. HEED has to be the nastiest drink on the market.

Also, Set-Up needs to make the chutes and area where the bags were hung-up in T2 twice as wide. Could not get around people who were walking.

Overall, this is a fantastic event.

Nice job on the race.  Ironically I love Heed.    Very solid race though, especially for a first one.

I don't like HEED either. I switched to coke at about mile 6 or 7. It was heavenly and as long as you keep doing it, it can carry you to the end. Might be worth a shot, rather than HEED? Either way, nice job out there. It was really kinda warm on that run so nice job battling through.

Heed's ok, in my book, but not my first preference.

Mile 8 was a hard spot to hit. Glad you got through it and had a good race.

Rock on!

Thanks for the kind words but I don't feel like I had a "good" race.  Very pleased/surprised with the swim, happy with the bike but really down about the run (2:00 HM).  If nothing else, this will motivate me.  I'll be 61 in 3 weeks and thought that I would do one HIM to celebrate actually making it this long.  Now I'm hooked on HIMs.  I really enjoy training for this distance and B2B was by far the most enjoyable race I have ever done...been racing (running and cycling) for 35 yrs and my 4th year of tris. I'm going to take the next 2 weeks easy then start a 6x wk running schedule (Barry P's.)

Oh!!...wife has given a tentative ok on a used tribike!!!

You know what, people like you inspire me immensely! I am 40 now. I would be thrilled to still be doing this stuff at age 60+. Very impressive. Most people stop after college (or somewhere along there). Some continue and then stop in their 30s, then their 40s, then their 50s. You're still rolling! Rock on dude.

Those are fighting words!!!!  In the early spring, I stopped on a run to see if a young, very hot woman need some help.  She was working on her tri bike on the sidewalk.  She said that she had the problem fix.  I asked her what tri she was training for...did I mention that she was realllly hot?  She said B2B half and asked if I was also training for one.  When I told her B2B half also,  she crushed me!!!  First she asked my age then said "oh, that is so inspiring".  Damn, now I'm "inspiring" to young women!!!   Yell   Still haven't got'n over it!!!

I can't compete with a young, hot triathlete...sorry :-) But it is inspiring. It does have the feel of being called "sir" by a college kid for the first time though. Here you are thinking you are still pretty cool and some college kid calls you sir. Ouch.
