So IMAZ would be my first IM and probably the last unless I get picked for a lottery slot for next year at Kona. What do you think would be my finish time for IMAZ?

Training details and most recent race are below.

Training hours: I have been hammering the volume these last 6 weeks.  Out of the last 37 days, I have been running for 34.  6-7 days a week and most are definitely easy for sure.

These past 6 weeks, I have been doing between 15-20 hours of training mostly due to the running. I'm not swimming enough at twice a week, cycling is "ok" at 3 times a week which consist of 1 biggest gear trainer ride, 1 TT type of training, and one long ride (90-105 miles) which can be flat or hilly (think GMR and Crystal Lake Cafe for the soCal folks).

I have been running 40-50 miles mostly easy because I don't really know what pace to run in the marathon part of an Ironman since I haven' run more than 16 miles until 8 weeks ago.  No speed work at all since I want to get the running endurance first.

Today, I ran a 20-miler at 2:36:03 preceeded by a windy and hot 96 mile bike ride yesterday.

In terms of training history, I have been continually running 20-40 miles this year. When I was training for a half mary, I hit 60, got sick for 2 weeks, then hit my goal of sub-90 minutes.

My latest HIM race was Superfrog 70.3 with a finish time of 5:10:52.  The splits are 42:46, 2:35:33, and 1:45:46 with a total transition time of 5:57.  I know I'm a slow swimmer because I don't swim enough.  I was very conservative on the bike until the last 12 miles when a team mate steam rolled me then I paced him and we finished the bike together.  Due to the conservative bike, I felt good on the run at 8:03 pace.  6 miles of those were on the sand.  The other 7 miles, I had a 7:30 pace and continually dropping. Yes, my transitions have always been long...  I'm mentioning this race because its relatively flat like IMAZ and was my only HIM where I finally figured out my nutrition.

I think I can break 12 hours if I have a pretty conservative bike ride.  So what could possibly be my finish time?  I will make it a moderately hard bike ride and will not do what everyone is doing.  I would like to finish with a little bit of daylight left...

If you intend to do a "moderately hard" bike ride for your IM I would guess that your chances of a sub 12 finish are not good and the chances of a DNF or death march of a run increase.  "Moderately hard" and "conservative" are not the same thing in an IM.

Yep.  Make that bike ride 'super easy' and you will have half a chance of actually running the marathon.  Make the swim super easy too.  Do that, and you can break 12 hours.

I guess it could go like this:

Swim:  Looks like you're in for 1:30 or so.

Bike:  ~6:00

Run:  ~4:00

Transitions:  ~10

Total:  11:40

That's a good day.  As previous poster said, if you mess up, you'll have a bad day and then there's no telling when (or whether) you'll finish, but it won't be in daylight.

I would consider myself a pretty solid cyclist with my best 40K in a tri being 1:01:50, but I'm budgeting myself a 6hr bike.  The gains that I would get from pushing harder seem to not offset what I would lose in the run.  It's a long day, so I'm planning on staying on the upper end of Z1 on the bike.

I'm looking at sub 12 as my time too, so good luck, and maybe we'll "run" into each other at some point out there.

Thanks for the advice guys!  I guess I will make the bike easy and conservative.  12 hours on a good day huh?  Good to know!  Thanks again!

Oh yeah and hopefully we bump into each other bud!  If you see a tri short with "Noah" at the back, that's me.

Made it in 12:13:14.  Cement run absolutely destroyed my quads which I know it does.  I gave it my all and I don't think I could have done a better job given the situation.  Back to 70.3 for me!
